Direction or Advice; I need both; I have questions about the formation of a unit, people near my area, and advice in forming my unit.

Greetings to you. I have come to you with questions and I hope you can answer them. I have been interested in Dagorhir and taking part in it for a long time, and recently, I have come into a position to do so. However, I live in Tucson, and traveling to Tempe every week for practice just isn't possible for me right now. Therefore, I've toyed around with the idea of starting a group here in Tucson, and that is why I've come to you.

First of all, is there actually an established unit in Tucson already? I cannot find any sign of one, but you are no doubt more knowledgeable about such things than I. Secondly, if I were to start a group here in Tucson, would we be able to be considered a unit under your Chapter, or would we need to register as a chapter ourselves? I suspect the former will be the case, but I'm just not positive. And lastly, has anyone in the recent past asked you about a group in Tucson? If so, could you possibly alert me to them, so that I can enlist their help?

I hope you can answer these questions for me, and I look forward to the day we meet, which I have no doubt will happen, one way or another.

With my thanks and highest regards,
The Southern Watcher

Actually our own Magnus Sore-end actually goes to school in Tucson. a while back he sort of attempted to start a Tucson group, however it never really went anywhere. i believe the issue was that in order to start a group you need loner weapons, good recruitment, and people who are very knowledgeable about dag. Magnus has been fighting with us for years so he is good, i think that together you guys could definitely have a shot at getting a group going. I'm sure he'll respond to this post, but he would probably be the best one to talk to about helping to start it. As for your questions, you would probably still be within our realm, Fugl Brenna.

Thank you for for that wonderful introduction (turd of a little brother), its Soren. Anyway, yea I'm down here in Tucson. I'm a senior engineering student at the UofA. I have 5ish years dag experience and can definitely help you out with the fighting as well as the construction side of things. I would certainly be interested in starting up a group down here. It will keep me from getting rusty every semester when I can't fight and it would be awesome to set up a sister realm with Fugl Brenna. I will warn you, setting up a group is a bit of an arduous process so one has to be in it to win it. Thats why I haven't put together a group yet, with my course load its been next to impossible to recruit for a realm. However, with another motivated person, we might be able to pull it off.

Some questions I would ask:
1. Where (roughly) are you?
2. Where would you like to have practice?
3. How often would you like to have practice?
4. Do you have any friends that are interested in helping start a group and/or any friends that you think would want to participate?
5. Are you willing to make a bit of an initial investment (mostly time, but some money) to get the group on its feet? This will include, recruiting, making garb, and making weapons (both yours and loaner gear).
6. Do you have any previous experience with anything like this? (this can be anything from experience in event planning/group organization to actual fighting experience)

I hope these questions aren't intimidating. I am just attempting to get to know you as well as get an idea of where your strengths lie and get you thinking about what you want in a Dagorhir group here in Tucson.

Hello Magnus. Good to meet you. anyway, I'll try to answer your questions as best I can

1: I live on the east side of town, not far from where Catalina Highway starts heading up Mt Lemmon.
2: I'm not sure exactly. Somewhere centrally located would be ideal, and open enough to practice in. You have any input on this one?
3: Preferably once or twice a week. Maybe in the late-afternoon or early-evening.
4: I'm asking around as I come in contact with them. There's one I've contacted who might be interested, but I'm still asking around.
5: Most definately. I wouldn't be considering starting a group if I wasn't willing to put effort into it.
6: No combat experience, but I have had experience with event planning and group organization from school projects, social gatherings, and some experience in starting up groups in online games (part of the reason why I came here to inquire about any people down here. It's far easier to get a group started when you've got a core to build on)

Not to sound suspicious or confrontational, but might I ask you to answer the same questions for me? I wouldn't mind being able to know your strengths as well, and determine which strengths and weaknesses we each can counterbalance to make this easier for both of us. I look forward to hearing from you.

Not an unreasonable request;

1: I live near the UofA 6th ave and Grant

2: I would love to have it Mansfield park near my house, however there might be locations with better foot traffic for recruiting. All I would suggest for me is the closer to the university the better.

3: Probably once a week

4: This has been my biggest challenge in attempting to start a group. My friends alternate between drinking/partying to HW and school stuff. Most of them aren't interested in dag.

5:I'm totally game to help start a group, however my scheduling is exceedingly hectic so finding time will be a challenge. Also, I graduate in May and likely won't be able to get a job in Tucson and will have to go elsewhere for work so hopefully the group will be on its feet by then.

6: Fighting experience:
-Fighting dag for roughly 5 years
-Member of Fugl Brenna's elite Baritus unit
-Specialty Short Sword and Shield (specifically center anchor)
Building experience
-Basic foam smithing
--swords
--shields
--maces
-Some limited garb construction
-Limited leather working
Organizational Experience
-3 years of intense leadership positions within groups at the UofA
-Organizational leadership

Hope that helps!
I'll get back on either later tonight or tomorrow to bring up some ideas I have but right now i have to head to a meeting.

Alright, well here are some steps we need to think about.

1. Find a practice location-generally local parks are the best option, preferably ones that have a lot of foot traffic, as we have found that often new recruits are people who just happen to see us at the park.

2. Build gear-we can't have a practice until we we have gear as well as loaner gear for the casual passerby. This will allow someone interested to immediately get in the action. I think it would be best to get as many people interested as possible as soon as possible, so that we can have a build day so that we can have a core group that already has its own gear as well as some loner gear.

3. Get garb-Whilst dag is different from other boffer games in that we focus on predominately fighting and little role playing, a person in garb always looks better fighting than a person in sweat pants.

4. Put together a binder-this will have attendance sheets (mostly for reference and also for a future ranking system), the rules, waivers, and promotional handouts to give to interested parties.

I know this is a bit of a tsunami of information but we can always take things one step at a time, I just want to get it all out in one place so that it can be easily referenced.

As someone who lived in Tucson for many years and is part of a group that has a chapter in Tucson, might I suggest Reid Park--Broadway and Country Club. It's fairly central, not too far away for UofA and has a decent amount of foot traffic--especially on the weekends. It also has some fairly large areas that are good for fighting.

Hope that helps.

Thanks Mynwyn. I was thinking Reid Park might work too, although I imagine Mansfield could work too, although if that were the case, we'd probably want to put extra effort into recruitment/advertising, to compensate for the lost foot-traffic.

Magnus, could you give me a rough estimate of what you think we would want in terms of loaner gear? Since you've had experience in this, I figure you might know a little more about what newcomers would want or need.

By the way, I may have two more people who are interested. I'll keep you posted on when/if I find any more.

So, the main items we will need to begin with:

7-10 blue weapons
2-3 shields
1-2 reds
1-2 greens (however, these are harder to make as one has to get their hands on band shoppe poles)

Fellow Fugls feel free to comment with any ideas or suggestions you might have. Also, do you guys have any spare stuff that i could get my hands on when I come up there this weekend?
