So josh brought up some discussion on the rank system last practice, and i did some research to clarify. "the hippeis ("horsemen," since they were the men who could afford to keep a horse for the cavalry)"(Pomeroy p. 167). and from wiki "Among the Spartans, it [the hippeis] was the royal guard of honour, consisting of 300 chosen Spartan youth under the age of thirty, who, although originally mounted, afterwards served as heavily-armed foot-soldiers." as for the ephors: "The Spartans retained the chief system the longest, though in a unique form. in the Spartan system of government there were two hereditary, life-long basileis who ruled jointly, a custom that continued unbroken until the third century BCE. still, the powers of the spartan basileis were far form absolute. they did retain considerable authority as military commanders; but to curb their power the Spartans chose an annual board of five magistrates, ephoroi ("overseers"), whose job it was to make sure that the basileis ruled lawfully and to prosecute them if they did not" (Pomeroy p. 89)

Pomeroy, Sarah B. "Ancient Greece A political, social and cultural history", blah blah blah publisher info, i have to go to work now.
