DIY Fahrenheit T-Shirt

So, you know how you can just NOT find a Fahrenheit t-shirt pretty much anywhere? Well, I got sick of not having one, so I decided to make my own! I was inspired by a craft project on nickjr.com that I did with my kids...

It's pretty simple, just print out an iron-on on your home printer...It looks long because I wanted to explain it step-by-step.

DIY Project: Fahrenheit T-Shirt!!

Here's what you need before you get started:

-Access to a color printer

-Iron-on transfer paper (I used Avery Dark T-Shirt Transfer paper for my shirt)

-A clean cotton t-shirt, can be new or used but should be prewashed

-An iron

-An old pillowcase (one that you don't care if it gets iron marks)

-A hard surface (kitchen table will work fine)

Once you have all your materials gathered, start by finding a high-quality image of Fahrenheit online. (I used the Boy version album cover of 2-Faced.)

Then, resize the image to the size you want on the t-shirt. This can be done using any photo-editing software. If you're not sure how big it is, do "print preview" to check before printing. The image will have to print out to about 7 in. by 10 in. or less in order to fit onto the 8.5 by 11 inch transfer paper.

Once you're sure the image is the size you want, stick the transfer paper into the printer.

BEFORE YOU PRINT: Please note that you will have to use your photo-editing software to "flip" or reverse your image before printing if you are using regular transfer paper (the kind for white t-shirts, rather than dark). The reason for this is that you will be sticking the image face down to iron it onto the t-shirt.

Now, go into your "Printing Preferences" on your printer tab.

Under "Media," select whichever option says "Iron-on transfer paper". Don't worry about what brand of iron-on paper it might say. For example, mine says "HP Iron-on transfer paper", but it still works for my Avery paper.

Now, under Quality Settings, select "Best".

Okay, now double check to make sure everything it set up properly by hitting "Print Preview". If you are using regular, white t-shirt transfers, your image should look backwards. If you are using Dark T-Shirt transfers, your image should look normal.

If everything looks good, print out your image. Your image will be a little damp fresh out of the printer, so set it aside to dry for a few minutes.

While your image is drying, get your iron, pillowcase, and t-shirt out.

Set your iron to its highest cotton temperature setting and preheat for 5 minutes.

Get your pillowcase, fold it in half, and place it on the hard surface you're using. (I used my kitchen table-make sure it's clean first.)

Place the t-shirt on the towel. (Make sure the part of the t-shirt you're applying the image to isn't laying over any seams or folds in the pillowcase.)

Now, go get your image.

For White t-shirt transfer paper:

-Place the image, upside down, onto your t-shirt.

-Make sure image is centered on shirt.

-Applying lots of pressure, iron the image onto your t-shirt using a back and forth motion. Make sure to pay extra attention to the edges and corners. Timing of the ironing depends on the size of your image. There will be a timing table included in the instructions that come with your paper.

-Allow image to cool on t-shirt

-Very carefully peel away the paper backing on the image. All done!

For Dark t-shirt transfer paper:

-Carefully peel paper backing off of image

-Center image on t-shirt

-Place a sheet of the tissue paper that comes with your Dark t-shirt transfer apper on top of your image.

-Applying lots of pressure (the dark transfer paper requires TONS of pressure to properly stick it to the t-shirt), iron the image onto your t-shirt using a back and forth motion. Pay extra attention to the edges and corners of your image. Timing of the ironing depends on the size of your image. Refer to the chart included in the instructions for your paper for timing info.

-Allow image to cool on shirt.

-Very carefully peel tissue paper off the image. All done!

Here's how mine turned out. This is the shirt after about 15-20 washings, so it has held up really well for a DIY.

Oh my! I love your shirt. Thanks for the info. I thought you just print it out and iron-on. Well I could have ruined my shirt just like that. Thanks for the info. Cause last time, I had this iron-on-to-your-tee paper thing from a magazine, but i lost it and it had nothing to do with fahrenheit[[:
