Bandar Seri Begawan - Despite Brunei being a welfare-orientated country, the awareness of special-needs children still needs to be increased so that the public may be more understanding of their condition. Brunei's leading health and fitness club, Fitness Zone, has launched a four-day charity sports carnival yesterday to raise funds for these children. Having a younger brother, Fairul Azmi Hj Suhaimi, who is a down-syndrome child, Mohd Arif Fikri Hj Marzi highlighted that such children generally face challenges as they are "often misunderstood" by the public. "Some people do talk negatively behind our backs and call him names, but I am not bothered because I know better," he said. "He is still family and we love him." Special-needs children are "just like any other normal person", Mohd Arif said. In fact, these children may even be "more loving and caring" compared to other "so-called normal people". 'Although Fairul is only six, he tries to help around the house as much as he can such as sweeping the floor and washing the clothes," he said. "The only difference is that special children tend to be slower learners. That is all." Mohd Arif highlighted that the urgent need for families with special children is not monetary support but better facilities to help train these children. "The biggest headache that we constantly face is trying to understand him through his gestures," he said. "I hope my brother will be able to speak one day (through proper training)." The primary school teacher also told The Brunei Times that the event is meaningful as it provides a platform for the public to discover more about special-needs children by mingling closely with them. "Brunei may be a well-to-do country, but there are still people in the society who need our attention and help," said Wu Chun, the owner of Fitness Zone. He also commented that Brunei residents are generally compassionate and would love to help the needy, but are often unaware of the means available to do so. "Organising such public events is therefore important to give the public an opportunity to actually contribute to help make a difference," said Wu, who is also a singer and actor. "People with such capacity should collaborate together to organise such events in the future on a consistent basis." Participant for the Fitness Zone charity programme Keeran Janin thinks that the special children are "in good hands" as Brunei residents are usually "well taken care of". Judging from the "visible support" observed at the event, he said, Bruneians are generally quite concerned about the welfare of these children. The event, specially organised by the Association for Children with Special Needs (Kaca) and UNICEF, was attended by Sheikh Jamaluddin Sheikh Mohammed, the Director of Tourism in Brunei who was the guest of honour. Also attending the function was Mohd Jaffari Hj Mahadi, the head of the supervision division of the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) and other NCB officers. From the Brunei Times, found at Fahrenciti ** Is it just me, or is anyone else really enjoying these articles which refer to Wu Chun as being the "owner of Fitness Zone" rather than a member of FRH...? Also, the photo of Chun with the child in the pink shirt is most likely the child with down syndrome this article is talking about (thank you, Rayne! =D) http://s1.zetaboards.com/FromUs2Fahrenheit/topic/1044909/10/ Edited by Kejli, Aug 11 2009, 11:57 PM.

I found one!! Chun's speaking in English but it's a little difficult to understand what he's saying due to sound issues. And re: the kid in the picture that's shown in another thread; I think it's actually a different child. The article mentioned a 6 year old child and from the size of the kid in the picture I would guess he's only 3 or 4. But either way the kid is adorable. I've always loved kids & adults with Down Syndrome - they are some of the happiest, friendliest people in this world. If anyone would like to visit me the first weekend of October you're welcome to join our family as we participate in our local Buddy Walk to raise funds for Friends of the Trisomy 21 Center; it's a center at our local Children's Hospital that provides comprehensive medical care and education for families of individuals with Down Syndrome. We've participated almost every year and enjoy it immensely. Sorry, got slightly OT. Edited by rayneweather, Aug 13 2009, 08:50 AM.

Awwwahhhh his accentttt <333 XD I am sooo glad he was able to do this and didn't have to leave because of work. You can tell it's something he truly cares about, and he's able to relax; here in his home country he's not predominantly a super-idol, he's the owner of Fitness Zone who's helping raise money for these poor kids. You could just see it in the way he walked back to his seat, among other things. He has a very bright future in front of him, post-Fahrenheit ^^ |

Yup, totally agree with you Kejli. He looked so relaxed and "himself". You brought up a good point about his future post-Fahrenheit. I guess as difficult as it is now working in a different country it helps to separate his personal life from his career so that he can transition back easier than if he were to remain in Taipei. That's often so difficult for those who are no longer idols or want to leave the entertainment circle. We all know that if he wants to Jiro has a long acting career in front of him, Calvin can easily transition into the business world and Aaron, well he can do whatever he puts his mind to :-) I can see him working behind the scenes in the music industry training new idols. While some may see the fact that they have all pursued education and other interests outside of music as a detriment to their improvement and advancement I see it as a good thing, at least for the long term. Now they have something to "fall back on" once their careers are idols are over. Something that is often lacking in American superstars - both in & out of the entertainment world. |

waaahh!! Sorry ladies, I was having a hard time catching up with Chun's latest activities. He did so much in like 3 days. Istill can't get over the Ferrari thing, and then there's anew one, and then a new one.. it just goes on and one. The vid that Rayne posted was from Fay she's from Chun's thread at Chillies, and as of right now that's the only one that I've seen too. I know Chun hosted a charity auction, a Run for a Better Brunei event in celebration of FZ's 2nd anniversary, then there was this basketball thing too, funny on how he went on that event and its sponsored by Pepsi.. I will get on it and give you guys the latest details, pics and vids.. again, so sorry.. |

Thanks for sharing the video!!! Totally true. I think showbiz is just a momentary thing. I do remember Chun mentioning in one of the videos that showbiz is just for a moment of his life but his family would be for a lifetime. I think he's a really career minded person, planning his future ahead of time so that he would have something to fall back to once he leaves showbiz. This makes all of us admire him right? hehe. PLUS it's good we know where his gym is so we could still find him at his gym if he really does quit showbiz. AND I do remember him mentioning in one of his blog entry that when he leave this line he could have fun with all of his fans and mayb get even crazier! (which is a good thing) Ahhh i really wane meet him!!! |

Hmmmm now wouldn't that be interesting if he were actually able to interact without his fans without fear of what may happen to his career! I just hope none of the fans get too crazy ^^; |

I think that is a dream for many stars (Show Luo, anyone??) If only there was a magic wand to make all the crazy fans disappear or create a soundproof barrier that won't let them within 1km :-) |
