Kejli mentioned she wants to learn the Chinese flute. You'll be able to do this piece in no time, right? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r1PQtAvznrA |

I'm afraid to listen to this if I'm going to hypothetically be expected to play it XPP Chinese flute is so beautiful <3 And since I already know how to play a western flute, I already have half the battle down, right?? xD (My flute looks exactly like her's too ^^) Oh my gosh, that's fast o__o http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CHQaUCsq0YM This is the song and version I wanted to perform, inserting a Chinese flute part I'm going to have my brother write during the piano interlude. I love Vienna Teng so muuuuch <33 |

What a beautiful song; has almost a Celtic feeling to it. Your brother writes music?? That's awesome, what a talent. While looking through the videos I saw that people hold them on either side of their head; I've never seen people do that with a Western flute. Is it similar to how some left handed people hold their guitars flipped to the other side? |

Yeah, I actually was confused by that back in eighth grade when I was reading Fushigi Yugi and my favorite character, Amiboshi, played his flute on both sides. I know that with the western flute it's only one side (I've tried playing on the other side... possible, but not fun XD), but I think with the eastern flute it has different connotations depending on which way it's played. That's just a faintly educated guess, though. I'll do some MITing and get you an answer =D |

Ahhh, I didn't think about it that way; I just thought it was personal preference. I can see why the Chinese flute is playable on both sides - it doesn't have all the keys & bars that a Western one does. Speaking of which, I wonder where mine is. Haven't touched it in years and it needs some work done on it. I've had it since 8th grade :-) I think I finally ditched the broken beginner one I got back in 3rd or 4th grade a few years back. |

My brother dabbles in arranging a bit, but he doesn't actively compose. He could probably arrange a little play off the melody for Dizi, though, or get a music major friend of his to do it quickly for him. (Northwestern has an /insane/ music school, so they could probably do it in their sleep.) Not much luck so far in finding a reason for right vs. left... I'll get back to you later on that. |
