Okay, because of the rampant lack of SRW being done, along with the general WTF at Jeff Ideon hijacking his own LP, I'm gonna do an LP of the first of the two SRW games that came to the US. Now, what is SRW, you ask? SRW, short for Super Robot Wars, is a SRPG akin to Fire Emblem and its ilk, where instead of fighting using mages and knights, you use mecha. Furthermore, these are mecha from the hallmarks of Mecha Anime, like Getter, Mazinger, Gundam, etc. The game I'm playing has none of these however, as licensing for all the series would make releasing the game in the US simply unfeasible. As such, the OG series makes use of original mechs from all other games. So, its soemthing of a mishmash of a mishmash. You'll see when I start playing...

After all that, if you're asking yourself, Dietaku, why the HELL would you wanna play this instead of Legend of Zeldamus: Blue Skinsuit of Destruction 4: Kittens Unleashed?
Posted Image
That's why. Anyways, onto the game!

Posted Image
Ah, Atlus, bringing us SRW and Demikids. If you haven't played Demikids, do so. Its a better version of Pokemon (although, Pokemon ripped them off, as it were.)
Posted Image
The actual publisher, Banpresto, now a subsidiary of Namco, I do believe.

Title....And....

Path select. Yes, SRW lets you most often pick your starting team. Our choices are Genki Man Ryusei and Sober Man Kyosuke. Now, here's the part where you can pitch in. Vote, and decided which Path I should take. Okay, so until next time, this has been teh Dietaku, signing out.

Seeing as it seems the people wish me to play Ryusei, I shall do so. Another thing of note is that I shall switch to small screenshots, as this game is somewhat long, and I'd rather this not require 300 pages for only half the game. Anyways...
Posted Image
The game begins with this scene, depicting the Hiryu, the blue spaceship in the center of the map being attacked by alien mechanical bugs. Interesting choice of weapon for aliens, but I guess if you've come light years to kick other civilizations in the tail, you have to do it with flair, right? Thus, faced with implacable foes, the Hiryu....
Whites out for an entirely different map.
Posted Image
Wait, what happened to the Hiryu? We don't know. (Well, in Kyosuke Path, its revealed that they escaped and limped back to the Moon, where, the Hiryu was modified into a space battleship in order to better fight these aliens.) Now, this single mech, piloted by Elzam Branstein, an ace from the Human Space Colonies (We're treated to this info in the next mission, but who cares, right?) and a lone ship. Elzam is then attacked by four of the bugs the Hiryu faced in the opening. Damn, if these bugs fought off a long-range spaceship like the Hiryu, they gotta be hot stuff right?
Posted Image
Not exactly. See, even if Elzam were to sit on his butt and twiddle his thumbs, he COULD NOT be hit by these bugs. He just couldn't. Another item of interest is in SRW, one can counter any enemy attack, provided you have a weapon that can reach them. This leads to the very real danger of taking damage on your own turn, but also allows you to deal damage to the enemy on theirs.
Posted Image
Here's Elzam
Posted Image
And his mech, the Gespenst Mk 2. For some odd reason, Elzam is under the delusion that his Gespenst is a horse. Why? I dunno (Well, I do, but that would be spoiling some major lolz in the next game.)
Posted Image
After defeating all five of the SCARY bug machines (One randomly appears after you beat the others and is auto KO'd by Elzam) , we are then white out'd to yet ANOTHER new scene. This time involving our man Ryusei and a gal pal, Kusuha. Apparently, Ryusei is a giant mecha otaku, to the point of even ignoring Kusuha in order to play his game, Burning Trooper 3, which, kinda makes him just like every other male anime lead ever. Tis a shame, as Kusuha is not lacking in endowments.
Posted Image
Here she is folks, for your viewing pleasure.

Getting back to the game, its revealed that Ryusei is entiering a Burning Trooper tournament in order to pay for his sick mother's hospital fees. Wow, yet another Anime trope. Get used to it, as we'll see many more along the way.
Posted Image
Sure enough, Ryusei stomps the competition, beating them in record time. Reminds me of a certain BBW loving admin here. This also segues into a duo consisting of scary blue haired man(?) and funky green ahired woman. Oh, wait, his name is Ingram. He's a man. I don;t know if that's a good or bad thing there.
Posted Image
And Aya, the green haired woman. At least she can be ID'd as a woman, unlike her partner.
Posted Image
Sure enough, Ryusei's epic asswhooping causes Alien Bugs to land right outside, and cause an uproar. Why the Japanese are fazed by this, I dunno, seeing as this kind of thing happens a lot in Anime and Tokusatsu.
Posted Image
Unlike Elzam "PEWPEW" Branstein, Ryusei actually gives the Bugs a sporting chance. Or he sucks right now, to the point that the Bugs can hit him. Take your pick.
Posted Image
Ryusei in his Gespenst. Yes, its a palette swap of Elzam's. Once again, get used to it. Although, it should be noted that Elzam's could only slap people, while Ryusei's actually has a gun and some missiles.
Posted Image
Sweet! First kill for Ryusei! I just love the little, "!?!?" the Bugs do before exploding.
Posted Image
After a turn, help arrives in the form of two nameless grunts (TM) and major Kai Kitamura, all of them in green Gespensts. I didn't waste my time with the grunts, and just had Ryusei lay the hurt on the remaining Bugs, whereby Ryusei levelled up. After the battle, Ingram rev eals himself to be the head of the SRX military Super Robot project, and forces Ryusei to join. This doesn't faze him, as its Ryusei's dream job, anyways. And that's it for Missions 1 and 2. Next time, we're introduced to yet another SRX member, and his sickeningly angst-filled past. Look forward to it!

Yeah, seven levels can make the difference between enemies being jokes and being potentially lethal.

Oh, you know what I mean, Jeff. You rock at games, is all.

ANYWAYS, Update time!

In our last mission, Ryusei was forced into his dream job. The next mission is kinda lame, but in the name of LP, I will press on. In this installment, we meet Raidese V. Branstein, ace pilot of the UCC. Wait, he shares surnames with Elzam! Are they related? Well...we'll see. Here's Rai, who I hear is quite the looker. I honestly can't really tell.
Posted Image
Rai is kind of a dick at first, but he mellows out soon enough. Anyways, the actual mission itself is a training simulator. That's right. If we die in this all we get is a big, "LOL SUCKA," and a retry. The BIG deal here is that we're introduced to several new units. On our side, we have the Schutzwald, filling the "sidekick mech with bigass lasers" requirment for all Real Robot teams.
Posted Image
And on the enemy side, we have some jet fighters and tanks. The tanks are effectively the same as the bugs we've been fighting up to this point, and the fighters a tad idfferent.
Posted Image
The Tank
Posted Image
And the fighter. Now, the deal with the fighter is that its easier to kill than the tanks, but is insanely fast. Whoa, then? How are we gonna shoot them down? Well, we select a unit, in this case, Aya, and look for "Spirits"
Posted Image
Spirits act kind of like buff magic does in traditional RPGs, expendiing PP to give you various effects. Here, we want Focus, as it not only lowers their hit percent by 30% but alos raises ours by 30% Plus, it works until our next turn. Win-win all round.
Posted Image
Heh, even the tanks and planes do the ," !?!?!?" that the Bugs do. Good stuff.
Posted Image
Alright! Battle Mastery earned! Battle Masteries are won by finishing various requirments, like killing all enemies within a certain turn limit or finishing the mission by a certain time. Most aren't NEEDED to be done. But, they net you extra parts, which you can upgrade your mechs with. Thus, its in your best interest to do as many as possible.
Posted Image
After the battle, we're introduced to several new characters, at the top is," Loli sniper" Latonni, and the bottom is "Boobs," Garnet. Although, with her face, and the lack of anything but headhsots for her in this game, I'd shie away from that.
Posted Image
And the third part of this trifecta of QUALITY is Giado, the Reggae Mastah. Yes, even in outer space, there are a bunch of Bob Marley wannabes out there. Thank goodness they don't join us just yet.Onto the next mission!
Posted Image
The irony here is amazing. Way to break the fourth wall there, Aya.
Posted Image
And what was hsaping up to be as lame as last mission suddenly turned from lame to AMAZING in just one turn. Also, I find Ingram to be amusing with this line, as its completely out of character for him.
Posted Image
And here's the carrier we're saving. On it is Irmgard, the most badass mullet-wearing man I've ever seen. And considering mullets act as coolness limiters, that's saying quite a bit.
Posted Image
And here are the enemies we have to defend the carrier from. Hold on a tick? What's that? You mean its not Super Tank Buster Wars?
Posted Image
Yes, children, we actually begin fighting enemy mechs now. Tenzan, the pilot is also of note, as he's supposedly a Burning PT player, too. Go fig, the enemies AND the UN both watched "The Last Starfighter."
Posted Image
And with some carefully casted spirits, Rai and Ryusei can snipe the planes and the mech, called a Lion (Rion in Japanese) making this map once again, a total farce.
Posted Image
Even Tenzan gets a piece!
Posted Image
And Ryusei realizes that he just entered real combat, hours after doing so, having a bout of EMO, even after stomping the enemies to the curb.
Posted Image
And Ingram and his buddies speculate on where the Lion came from. The only person they can think of is THAT MAN, the head of the Earth OuT Technology Institute. Could it be him? Find out next time. Until then, this is Deitaku, signing out!

Granted, I haven't gotten far enough into the game to be sure, but I recall reading that getting many Battle Masteries winds up upping the difficulty eventually. Is this true?

That's true. in fact, I have two so far in this playthrough, and my difficulty is set to "Hard." Now, in OG1, this is no biggie, but in OG2, it can make or break you. However, to even this out, you get more parts, plus, getting most of the kickass secret mechs hinges on getting various Battle Masteries
