The DDR of all things Rythm
Hurray! Finally, I've taken the time to review some games and such. First off, today heralded the release of Zombie Panic Source on Steam. I eagerly delved into a game with stellar gameplay, fun multiplayer and a unique twist on team deathmatches.

You basically start off as either a survivor or a zombie. However, I first learned that most people like to be survivors and as such rush to the human team entrance before anyone else can join. For my first few rounds I was stuck playing as a zombie. Not that it wasn't fun, but as I learned there were more benefits to playing as a human.

For instance, as a human you have a whole arsenal of weapons, whereas when you were zombie you only had your hands with which to attack people. Simply put, NOT FUN. Humans are more fun to play as, because of the team work as well. As a zombie, you are basically a loner, going around and randomly attacking people. But as a survivor, you talk to each other through voice chat and plan strategies to outmanuever the erratic zombie hordes.

My one major qualm with the game is the insulting. I was constantly insulted throughout the whole time playing it, because most of the People were familiar with Counterstrike and could easily pwn me if they wished.

All in all, the game is fun and best of All FREE!!! I encourage anyone with Steam to download it, play it, get addicted to it, and play it some more.

Huzzah I'm DONE!!!!!

I totally agree with you! It is fun, and the insulting is true. However, you write too much like and old monk. Tone it down, I've seen how you've written before. Go back to the old style DDR!!!

Following the lead of Jeff, I have decided to review this crud-tacular game! So, when I first downloaded the game, I was excited to play, as I am a huge Elder Scrolls fan. I found out I had to download an emulator, same as Jeff. I had virtually no problems with using the emulator, because I have used it before for other games. Anyway, I booted the game up and it seemed to start nicely.

THE MENU SCREEN: I was greeted with the traditional scroll for a screen prominent in most video games with a medieval theme. Upon the menu loading, I immediately clicked "Start New Game". That ended my view of the menu screen, nothing good, nothing bad. It was just a menu screen.

CHARACTER CREATION: The character creation was just plain weird. It was almost being like in a parody of a Shakepeare play. "What is thy name", "Whatest thou thy do foreth a living-eth?", and "Whereth arest though frometh?". It's just just too silly. I opted for the option of just selecting my character and going head on into the game. This would become the worst decision of my character's life. I ended up as an old man with a creepy permanent smile...He looked a-lot like Chuck Norris, come to think of it. Perhaps the programmers thought it would be funny if they included him in. I didn't. Out of sheer cheek, I named him Chuck. So somehow, I ended up as Chuck the Bard. Yep. Good ol'e Chuck the Bard. What is his special power? Round House Kicking Crappy Game Producers while singing American Pie.

The GAMEPLAY: Chuck the Bard was somehow placed into a Jail cell after having a dream about some kind of blue later telling him about a guy named Jagar Tharn. Wow...Chuck must have been on something, or game creators do not have very good ideas for RPG games. So, I, as Chuck found some kind of key on a brown paper bag. I say brown paper bag, because you can't really tell what in the name of Don Mclean it is. Is it a bed. No, too lumpy, no pillow. A table? Nope, tables usually come off the ground more than 1 foot. So my conclusion is that it was Chuck's paper bag full of special "Blue-Lady" food. On top of the bag of blue lady food, was a key, that opens up the door to the cell. Easy enough...NOT! Once you are out in the dungeon, you can't escape without being killed by the wind, for instance, Chuck was just standing there when suddenly the Blue Lady appeared and said "Chuck you are dead" and basically insulted his honor. I tried again, this time I made it to the end of the dungeon, but the Lady suddenly appeared and again stated that somehow Chuck died. That ended my 30 minutes of playing the game.

MUSIC: The music sounded like a midi being replayed through an Atari Master System. It wasn't very good, considering that it was released in 1994. That's basically all, other than it sounded like a precursor to the medieval orchestral music TES fans enjoy today.

OVERALL: While the game, my have been good when it came out, it wallows in mediocrity now. Chuck can't attack with his fists, let alone a round house kick! The music is bland, the only fun I had was the character generation. Let's turn this over to Chuck the Bard for the Final Score.

Chuck- Thanks DDR, the final grade I give this is 1 round house kick out of five, because it has nothing to it. It's just cliche, old, boring, monotonous and the whole plot has been tired into nothingness. Now if you excuse me, I have a meeting with some goblins in The Imperial Province.

Ahh yes. The game that nearly made me hate RPGs forever... well, not really, but it was pretty bad... Good job.

Well, from Zombies to the Medieval ages... Back to Zombies? That's right folks, it's time to review Left 4 Dead!

First Impressions

Well, the premise is pretty simple. Have gun, will kill zombie. Basically, it's your job to help 3 other players (Or NPCs if you're friendless) fight through hordes and hordes... and hordes of zombie mayhem. When I first started playing the game, I was pretty clueless. I had to rely on the help and tips from my more seasoned teammates to get me through the first level. This is where the game truly shines. You're actually helping each other, no COD4 lone wolfing. If someone goes up ahead, gets grabbed by a mob of zombies or a hunter (More on him later) then he's screwed if no one can reach him in time. All in all, the game at first glance is a pretty creepy, awfully fun and all around solid game.

The Good

There's a lot of good things about this game.

1) First, the whole eerie feel of the game. There's not much of a plot, you're basically given an opening cinematic to each of the campaigns and you're off. This adds to the creepy unknown feeling of the game. Without much backstory it makes you feel like you are one of the people in the game, not knowing what caused it, but simply knowing that you're in it, and you have to get out.

2) The team based campaign multiplay. The campaign playthroughs are all together satisfying on their own in single player. However, Left 4 Dead does what few games do well and actually add player connectivity into the mix. One second everything is fine, and the next your teammate is being attacked by the horde, and you have to help him/her out of the mess. The game actually makes you feel connected to the players you are playing with, rather than just some anonymous n00b that you just fragged with an M16.

3) The graphics. The graphics make this game more immersive than many other games, the simple effect of film grain make the overused Source Engine into a gritty film-noir zombie flick. The film grain in its self adds too much to the atmosphere of the game. The character models also add a sense of familiarity. They don't look like the models from Half Life, which were made more to intimidate and confuse. These characters are more rounded, to make them contrast the stark game world around them. I, myself really enjoy the flashlight effects. For instance, if you and someone else point the light in the same direction the beam intensifies, you can also see your teammates' beams to help find hidden threats.

4) Survival Mode. Survival mode, is simply a challenge mode for the game where you fight off never ending hordes in a single location. It can be quite hard, but it is really addicting, and adds more replayability to the game through achievements and time records.

The Bad

There's not too much to complain about in Left 4 Dead, however I have a few personal complaints that I probably share with a lot of gamers.

1) Versus Mode is lackluster in comparison to the rest of the game. I mean c'mon, it's campaign mode with other people playing as the zombies, and at that the players playing as the infected get killed every 10 seconds. Not fun.

2) Idle mode. Being able to put your character into idle mode was a cool idea at first, but when people are gone for half an hour during an expert campaign, it's a little bit annoying.

Conclusion

In conclusion, Left 4 Dead is an excellent game that is anchored by two solid team based multiplayer modes, amazing graphical detail and high production values. There are a few minor bugs, but it's worth the money overall.

RATING:
4/5
