After some consideration, I think a venue outside of the game thread where the game (both the individual game and the system itself) can be discussed would be a good thing to have. I'll use this thread to post NPC info, help with your characters, and answer any questions you have. You guys can use this thread to ask questions, comment on how the game is going, post updates to the characters, post proposed charm inventions, discuss the game with each other or talk about exalted in general. Have fun! Edited by Kesler, Nov 10 2011, 06:38 PM.

So, what's your position on Chungian versus cinematic coimbat? I try to do more cinematic combat, as it smacks less of the no fun allowed mentality of Chung, but one has to acknowledge the points he raised, especially in that Solar Dr. House is somehow better at combat, just with his anima and all, than an offensively minded ISP build. |

I prefer more cinematic combat, because I honestly don't think it's realistic (HAHAHAHA! Realistic in Exalted!) for anyone to be truly minmaxed. I try to make NPCs who should be strong at combat strong but not unbeatable, because no one will ever think of most contingencies. If I wanted to, I could have had Dyrus kill you all, with only minor tweaking to how I stated him out, but it wouldn't have made sense for him to be tweaked for combat because he was an Yozi Evangelist, not a fighter. Plus, unless your playing a loyalist Abyssal, fighting should be a means to an end, not an end to itself. That means that social combat and intellectual pursuits are as important, if not moreso than combat. And there's the things that you can't beat just by brute force, like the Deathlords, the Neverborn, Ligier, or that one behemoth that's tied to the shinima. Even paranoia combos and being a flurry machine won't save you from them. That said, exalted is far from the finest honed system, and Chung does raise a lot of good points. I just prefer thinking outside the box in-character to building a character that can do anything in combat. |

Is there any way to make a viable PC (Ergo, Noble) Raksha build outside of mutations? That seems to be their only way that they can possibly be on par with Exalts, especially Celestials. As it is, I fail to see how the Balorian Crusade happened, given even DBs' large resistance to any and all shaping attacks, which is the Raksha's main draw. |

First, I would ask whether you really need to invent a style IC, or you just find an older "lost"/ out-of-style Martial Arts Style. Then, here is my list of rules. 1.) Have mastery of at least one style of the level you are creating or higher (defined as knowing the form-type charm). 2.) Be able to teach styles of that level (Sidereals and Solar Akuma for SMA, Celestial Exalted, DBs and Spirits of Essence 5+ for CMA) 3.) Have the entire style stated and reviewed by me before you learn the first charm. 4.) Have the Mins required by the Form-type charm prior to learning the first charm If you want, I can post my guidelines for OOC style creation. Edited by Kesler, Nov 14 2011, 02:23 PM.

That's a hard one. I think that the viability of a Raksha is directly proportional to the creativity of the player/ST controlling them. They have some rather unconventional charms and abilities compared to everyone else, so it would be rather easy for a mildly creative player to come up with something unexpected. That skirted around your question, though. Mechanically, I say focus entirely on one grace's charms, weapons, etc. While this brings you to a determent against other raksha, with all your eggs in one basket, it makes it easier to out-dice the exalted. As for the Balorian Crusade, you have to remember that A) the Solars weren't around (For the most part), B) there's only 300 Lunars, who were highly decentralized, C) The Sidereals were busy dealing with the Great Contagion, D) Most of the DBs had died off in the Contagion, and E) there were millions, if not BILLIONS of raksha invading creation. I know that doesn't really answer your question, but it's the best I've got. As it stands, I usually take GWM as a guideline for raksha powers rather than the rule, and even then, I have to fudge Raksha mid-combat to make them competitive. A general rule of thumb I have is that, if I can imagine something, and it broadly fits their concept (or at least does not contradict it), then they can be reasonably be expected to be able to do it. Wow. That was a lot longer than I thought it would be. |
