Jeff's Art Experiments!

Basically, I'm a part-time cartoonist. I'm by no means the best (My buddy, Dan, is WAY better than I am, hands down) but I learned quickly I prefer drawing humans (or, at the very least, humanoids) and I found out that one of the best experiments for testing my limits was drawing plus-sized women. BBWs, if you will. As a result, that's what a lot of my art has become in recent times. However, I have also done art for Phoenix Root, several other characters of my creation, my takes on other characters and many others. Again, most of these will be humanoids in a standing, simple pose, as I try to branch off the simplistic into the more advanced. Just bare in mind some of my oldest sketches in the batch date as far back as September of last year. So! With that in mind, let's begin!

This was a simple request - a girl playing a Wii. Obviously this was early in my BBW sketch series - and quite some time go as should be quite obvious (I didn't know how to properly hold a Wiimote at the time...) So~ yeah. Let's move on.

Another request - a girl in a gothic dress. Well, that was easy, even if body proportion was still... kind of difficult for me back then. You must bare in mind that I have no formal art training at all. I learned to draw by mimicking other art styles, and incorporating new ideas where possible. Since big girls just don't show up in anime or video games much at ALL if EVER, my sources were painfully limited...

This is... well, exactly what it looks like. Carmen put some pounds on... it happens, y'know? I actually really like this one, even if I do suck at drawing hats...

Not too bad...I like it :D

Why yes, I do like snickerdoodles.
You're a good artist when it comes to bigger girls.

Keep up the good work!

More ahead!

This is actually one of my favorites - and one of the earliest sketches to actually have a name - Aerulyn, the BBW Fairy. She helps girls who out-grow or break clothes by replacing them, if the girl puts 'em under their pillows. It's silly, I know, but this one not only came out relatively well, but also without ANY erasing at all. Looking back, I could still improve, but that's the point of these experiments.

Trying too much at once can lead to disaster, as this picture proves. I tried to do an angle shot, and make a complex dress pattern, but it all lead to general disaster. I like her facial expression, but not much else about this one. Oh well.

Pulsar Platinum - my tribute to Hirohiko Araki's Star Platinum. However complicated it looks, she suffers from ONE major flaw. A flaw I call "Tree-Trunk Torso Syndrome" or "TTTS" for short. Basically I didn't understand the laws governing a woman's curves and natural body stature. As a result, this picture - and many other early examples - look incredibly awkward. I might consider re-doing this one someday...

Well, personally since I have no artistic talent, I tend to....look at everybody's art with much respect. Despite some flaws, very well done.

By the way, what is that book saying that's trying to eat her? Second picture?

Next up - some Super Smash Bros contenders go under the pencil, so to speak, by special request of a friend. Unfortunately, I dislike 2 out of 3 of them...

MARI--... uhh... Maria? Well, whatever you want to call her, I realized quickly TTTS is problematic even before I gave it a name. I'm generally unimpressed with how this one came out from the neck down. I also found that drawing overalls in detail is harder than it appears...

Posted Image

This one ended up so bad I see it in my nightmares. Everything that could go wrong with this, went wrong, and I dunno how I did it, but looking into her eyes makes my soul want to die a little...

Posted Image

Further proof that the third try IS the charm, this Pikachu lady ended up being the cream of the crop that day. My only REAL complaints about this one are that 1) I forgot the little red cheeks on the pika-hat and 2) ... well, I made her a bit unintentionally too top-heavy. Not that this is EVER a complaint of mine in real life, it just looks a little unbalanced...

I learn a lot from both mistake and success! More soon!

Wow...you're pretty good. Even if you don't like them, they're pretty good.

S'more! Also video-game inspired!

An Eggman fangurl! It was a request, and I actually kind of like this one - even if the Eggman emblem is a huge pain to draw...

Posted Image

A knight, using Final Fantasy Tactics as a guideline. I'd like this one so much more if I didn't PHAIL at drawing legs. However, I do, and so it looks really awkward. Just pay no heed to anything waist-down.

Posted Image

Again, third time is a charm. Using the samurai from FFT, I made this sketch. True the sword looks a little awkward, but had I not mentioned it, would you really have noticed? I also hate drawing feet/shoes, while I'm at it. This ended up being a success in my book, and was among the first few when I began to realize the curvature laws...

Expect even more soon enough!
