Sean's 360 Review Series Part 1: Left 4 Dead

It's been no surprise to most of my fellow staff that I've...gotten 360 crazy over these past days weeks months. However, this comes at quite the advantage. I have MANY new games to Review over this summer!

Calling Left 4 Dead part of my 360 review series is a bit of a misnomer as it's on the PC as well, but if you're going to rail on me for that you're missing the point.

Left 4 Dead, as you've probably heard a few times, is "The fun Zombie Apocalypse game you can enjoy with your friends". This is basically the ENTIRE point of the game. Left 4 Dead's set up pretty much RELIES on Cooperative Play.

The Campaign mode has you go one of four campaigns, each being five levels long. The objective is to get to the safe room in the first four levels, and in the last one hold out while a rescue vehicle arrives to take you to safety. Between you and the safe room however is a hoard of Zombies, Special Infected, and, depending on who you're playing with, retards.

Common infected are the ones you'll see the most, being "Common" and all. They're usually harmless and go down with a few shots though (one if you're using a shotgun, which you should if you're not a fucking retard is the recommended weapon for going through the game). The special infected are your main threat however.

Special Infected Roll Call! The hunter, who pounces on people and stuns anyone near them for a few hours seconds. The smoker, who can pull the survivors away from the rest of the group or off of ledges. The Boomer, who pukes on the survivors, blinding them and attracting a horde to them. (They also explode when shot, sending puke everywhere, but everyone loves to run right up to the goddamned thing when people are trying to shoot it you can push it away with a melee and shoot it at a distance.). The Tank, the strongest infected, capable of sending everyone flying with a single hit and capable of single-handedly taking down a team. There's also a fifth infected called the Witch, who won't do anything to you unless you provoke her. (of course, the game LOVES throwing her RIGHT where you CAN'T just walk around her.)

Anyways, that's enough for simply giving information.

As far as my opinions stand, the game is fun to play as long as you have some friends. I've personally found playing with people you don't know equivalent to getting your teeth pulled, only maybe slightly more painful. The Campaign mode is kinda fun to play but I personally seem to find more enjoyment in playing the Versus Mode, where you go up against another team and alternate between Survivors and Special Infected, trying to make the best progress through the levels (Spoilers: You'll more than likely never see the Safe Room.). It never quite gets repetitive because even in Campaign Mode anything can happen, even when you've got the motions down, there's only so much to predict.

The difficulty in my opinion is varied, as complete newbies can set it to Easy and Normal and not have too much trouble, Advanced for the experienced, and Expert for the masochistic\perfectionist.

That said, I have some problems with the games. The above-mentioned playerbase can be phenomenally stupid at times. (One game someone wanted to heal up so they could pick up an extra medkit. The time we wasted caused us to get attacked, and we had to use up TWO to heal up. Suffice it to say we got wrecked before we reached the end.). And actually finishing a game only works about 10% of the time, as most people start Rage Quitting around Stage 3 or 4.

Also, some of the Achievements are just absolutely insane. Yeah, do a campaign without getting harmed by Special Infected? Even on Easy that's close to impossible unless you have a perfect team of four set up. Expert can require a little too much perfectionism at times (common infected can incapacitate you in 5-10 hits, a Tank incapacitates you in one, a Witch will One-hit KILL you and you'll usually only get Medkits at safe-rooms, so you have to make sure to take as little damage as possible.)

Final Verdict, If you have a PC that can run it or a 360, You should get this game. It's very fun and most of the problems it has are either dealt with by having patience or in the case of difficulty, not bothering with those difficulty levels\achievements.

So...yeah. That's...pretty much it. Join me next time when I either review Saints Row 2 or Fallout 3. I'll figure it out somewhere along the line.

Also, I'm not reviewing Graphics or Music in a game anymore because I find it better to just focus on Gameplay, since that's pretty much what I do anyways.

Why yes, I do like snickerdoodles.
I once got a retard who, at the end of Expert on No Mercy, started healing me with a medkit when the chopper was landing.

And then a tank spawned behind us while I couldn't move, because the fucker was healing me.

Sean's 360 Review Series Part 2: Why Downloadable Content is like Pulling Teeth.

Yes, I'm aware Downloadable Content is not 360 exclusive, I merely find the concept of the 360 review series being about things that are not exclusive to the 360 funny. My examples will be 360 games, however, so I suppose it still stands.

Anyways, this is going to be an accentuate the negative review, as it serves to explain my problems with Downloadable Content.

Point 1: Release Downloadable Content that's actually not already on the bloody disc
Example Offender (Presumably): Beautiful Katamari

Ever hear of Crippleware? It's basically software that's missing several features with the intent that you have to pay for those. Some games with DLC will do this by having the data for the content on the disc, but they'll be locked out unless you purchase the DLC. This is incredibly cheap and essentially making you pay additional for something you already own.

Beautiful Katamari, while a great game, it has been noticed that the sizes of the released DLC rather small (around 300 KB), leading belief that the DLC is merely an unlock key. I note PRESUMABLY because I've not seen any proof of such a thing, although it is highly suspect.

Point 2: Fix the problems the main games have before you try to add more content into it.
Example Offender: Saints Row 2

Personally, I don't see the practicality of releasing additional content for a game or program that still has bugs to sort out in its core. It's like adding weight to an already unstable structure. The new content will either open up new glitches or just be plagued by the originals.

Saints Row 2 released its first DLC pack despite the game having problems with things such as Pathfinding being bugged and the game being susceptible to crashes, ESPECIALLY in Co-Op. Because of this, combined with the first mission of the DLC punishing us for playing Co-Op caused me and my friend to have to do the mission Solo. I haven't played much as of recently, so I've no clue if this was fixed when the second and third DLC packs were released.

Point 3: Make the DLC worth the cost, please.
Example Offender: Saints Row 2's First DLC Pack, Red Alert 3, Halo Wars...pretty much 80% of the games on the Xbox Marketplace. The only game I personally own that doesn't have this problem is Sonic Unleashed.

This one is a big offender, but the problem is that a good percentage of DLC costs MONEY, or in the 360's case, Microsoft Points, which is an annoyingly arbitrary currency for the system. Basically, the summarization of this problem is: The DLC that is released is usually NOT worth the extra cost to purchase it.

Example 1: Saints Row 2's Ultor Exposed DLC: 800 Points (about $10) for three (buggy) missions, and some more vehicles and clothing options. Granted, the vehicles were FUN and the third mission of the DLC was AWESOME, but that's probably me being good at stretching what I've got.

Example 2: Red Alert 3 Map Packs: About 400 Points ($5) for a few new maps. I didn't get this one but that's because there are already enough maps for RA3, it's not like you need a million maps in a bloody RTS, eventually the games get down to the same damn routine anyways.

Example 3: Halo Wars: Strategic Options: 800 Points for three new game modes. At first glance this seemed like an interesting way to add some fun to the game. Reinforcements left you having to be more tactical about your attacks because you had to work with what the game gave you, Tug of War emphasized building up and trying to destroy key points of an Enemy Force's unit, and Keep Away.. ...well, that was just to stick Capture the Flag, which seems to be Mandatory for Halo. We couldn't wait to play online! ....Except, everybody plays Standard mode and Deathmatch mode online. You will rarely, if ever, find a match on the other modes. Okay, so this example is somewhat shaky as my gripes with it are more on the playerbase, but I still think this could have been predicted.

Basically every other game I own except Sonic Unleashed has similar problems with Point 3, or just has free DLC.

...So, yes, those are probably the three major gripes I have with DLC. I hope this little review was a bit informative to all the 360 owners reading this (all two of you). Remember, check out online what's in the DLC to see if it's worth it before you buy it! ..And...that's about it!

Next time I'll review an actual game on the 360!
