And because I think RiderMan's lame.

A'ight, this time around, we're going to do the vote a little differently. Of the three, the winner of the vote gets LP'd first, the sequential losers go second, then third. We cool? Cool.

Choice 1)

Posted Image

Monster Rancher 2 (PlayStation)

A ranching story about a typical rancher trying his/her hand at... monster ranching. Go figure. It has lots of depth and plenty to do (not to mention some absolutely lul-tastic Engrish) without being head-crushingly deep like MRAdvance 2 was. In addition to being among the best of the MR games, it's open-ended and lends itself neatly to some new LP mechanics and crowd input.

Choice 2)

Posted Image

Breath of Fire 3 (PlayStation)

The continuing story of the BoF franchise. No, I will not LP BoF1, since it gets recapped enough times between this and BoF2 to have been done vicariously. Anyways, this is the best of the BoF games too, and has a small, controlled cast allowing for crowd input for team builds - as opposed to BoF2's solo missions.

Choice 3)

Posted Image

Legend of Legaia (PlayStation)

A unique hybrid of fighting and RPG game elements, a full 3D adventure with quirks and unique blend of epic story and humorous, heartfelt moments. This chronicles the charming tale of a boy named Vahn (or whatever we name him) and his interactions with the creatures known as Seru and his battle against the evil Mist!

All three are great games I've seen to completion several times, so get to voting! I hope to hear from you all soon!

Peace!

And the end vote came out:

Legend of Legaia (which shall never be abbreviated as "LoL"): 2
Monster Rancher 2: 1
Breath of Fire 3: 1

Anyone who has not voted yet *Cough*Dan*cough* can do so at any time between MR2 and BoF3 for the next LP down the line. But for now - Legaia wins.

Legaia was released in America in March of 1999, not too long after its Japanese release in October 1998. It was developed by small-time publisher Prokion and Contrail and - due to the size of the publishers - got little to no advertising in the western world. In fact when I bring this game up even to lovers of the obscure I tend to merit awkward looks. I've only met two other people who knew about the game before I did. So, simply put: it's a pretty little-known game. It's a full-polygon RPG game that incorporates fighting-game elements and one of the very few games to change the models of the main characters when they equip not just new weapons, but new armor too. In Japan, it hit store shelves just a year after Final Fantasy 7 and was thus thrown to the side.

A sequel, Legaia 2: Duel Saga, was released for the PS2 briefly after the console hit the market but had the poor timing of being released around the same time as Final Fantasy 10 and was once again, neglected, in spite of the Legaia sequel easily trumping the tenth FF game in every way.

As we will soon see, the story of Legaia the first is that humans live in a world alongside of strange lifeforms known as Seru. The Seru bond with humans and give them great strength or other powers, allowing them to better compete in a wild and savage world. One day, ten years before the game begins, a strange Mist flows across the world which drives Seru into a frenzy pitch and drag the human they're attached to along for the ride into debilitating madness. What caused the mist? How can we stop it? Let's find out!

Posted Image

To paraphrase Douglas Adams: this was a bad idea and made many people unhappy.

Posted Image

Translation: humans are dumb.

Posted Image

Kamen Riders?

Posted Image

Oh. That was my next guess. :ermm: Also, I have NO IDEA what's happening in those images there...

Posted Image

Yes. That huge thing is a type of Seru. Yes, we get to see it later on.

Posted Image

Like how to open the pickle jar without using one of those padded glove things!

Posted Image

It'd be a boring game if it was utopia from start to finish.

Posted Image
Posted Image

Who woulda thunk it?!

Posted Image

Personally, I blame the rap music.

Posted Image
Posted Image

We get a little panoramic view of the first town - Rim Elm - a town with a massive wall erected (tee-hee) around it so that the ocean wind would blow the mist away, and the wall would protect its inhabitants from the Mist monsters. The wall's been in place for roughly 10 years. They will tell you this about 20 times before we're done with the prologue.

Posted Image

Next, we get introduced to our blue-haired (of course) protagonist. His default name is "Vahn", but that'd be too easy. I'm going to name the heroes of this LP after the heroes of my previous LPs!

Posted Image

EVO for you, Fish!

Posted Image

Aww! He likes it!

Posted Image
Posted Image

Fish: Sure, let's go with that.
Elder: Gewd! I came here to cheer you up, but it seems there was no need...

Posted Image

Whatever that means, old-timer.

Next we set off to investigate the town and see what the deal is.

Posted Image

But we're stopped by... a woman with green hair. Huh. Okay. Sure, why not?

Posted Image

Fish: Huh?

Posted Image

Whoops. Better think fast, Fish!

Posted Image
Posted Image

*Insert overtly sexual joke here*

Posted Image

:$

Posted Image

So! Go ahead and speak with all the random people along the way back. This is mandatory and they're on your way back anyways. Amusingly enough, one lady calls him "Little Fish". Hee-hee-hee.

Posted Image
Posted Image

Nene: Why do we look like lemmings?
Mei: Because this is about as good as PlayStation graphics get. Suck it up.

Posted Image
Posted Image

And, of course, because Fish is an RPG hero, he's perpetually late regardless of how fast he moves from Point A to Point B. This pretty much guarantees that he can take as much or as little time to get anywhere and things'll turn out alright. Mei then begins groping measuring Fish.

Posted Image
Posted Image

*Insert another overtly sexual joke here*

She then leaves and Nene insists you go talk to her and thank her properly for her taking the time out to measure you.

Posted Image

I say "No" just to be arbitrary and confusing. She laughs and then goes on a little monologue about how much she loves sewing. O... kay.

Posted Image

Go talk to everyone else you haven't already (including the monk on the beach who offers to teach you how to fight) and it'll cue the return of the hunting party.

Posted Image

Yay! Did they bring candy?! Tell me they brought candy!!!

Posted Image
Posted Image

... That's not candy. That's... bad.

Posted Image

C'mon game, we just STARTED and you're murdering NPCs?! Mellow out!!!

Posted Image

:'(

Posted Image

Lots of angst... but I don't even KNOW the guy! And they named him Juno. Y'know. After a woman.

Posted Image

I want to emotionally support the girl I don't actually know!!! That's probably safer than my usual relationships with women!

Okay, okay, I'm going home. :-/

Posted Image

Nap time! Naps and showers fix EVERYTHING!!!

Posted Image

The one that sounds like a bee buzz-- oh wait, wrong RPG...

Posted Image

Seems... FISHY! *ZING!*

Posted Image

His Biron-Monk Senses are tingling! Or something.

Posted Image

Sure.

Posted Image

:O

Posted Image
Posted Image

So says the guy who looks like a Tolkien variation of the KKK...

Posted Image
Posted Image

I love how parasites refer to themselves as such nice things like "Salvation" or "Redemption" when it amounts to walking about with a massive bug gnawing on my head forever and ever. I don't think so.

Posted Image

The monk bitchslaps "Zeto" but it doesn't quite take.

Posted Image

Uhh... that's big. And surprisingly well-rendered.

Posted Image

WATCH OUT! IT'S CLOVERFIELD TEN YEARS EARLY!!! EXCEPT THIS ACTUALLY HAS A PLOT!

Posted Image
Posted Image

Damn, this FMV is hard to screen cap!

Posted Image

What Fish didn't know at the time was that Mr. Snufflekins was declawed and largely subsisted on shrimp, but was trained to knock down big walls and look scary. It's a misunderstanding that happened a lot.

Posted Image

Well, poop.

Posted Image

Mr. Snufflekins disappears and a small legion of Gimards (those weird chain-n-ball things with the beaks) flood in. You'll be attacked a minimum of one time but even that's dangerous. No, seriously, these are the first monsters in the game but they're REALLY tough. Their normal attacks aren't that devastating, but they run the risk of using "Tail Flame" which will blow about 60 of your 180 HP away per use. The best part? YOU CAN'T RUN AWAY. The VERY FIRST FIGHT IN THE GAME is a wake-up boss!!!

To fight, though, you select action and you tap directions on the control pad corresponding to attacks (High Kick, Low Kick, Left Punch, Right Punch) and inputting certain combos of moves unlock "Arts" which are special moves that spend Action Points (AP) which you gain each turn or gain a lot of when you block (Spirit). You can only use 3 moves right now unless you spirit, which will extend your meter for the next turn. Here's what you can learn right now:

Posted Image

Appreciate this. This is the only time I'm doing this for you guys. You're on your own from here on out in regards to art combos.

Go back to the tree where we started...

Posted Image
Posted Image
Posted Image

Always an excellent thing to do in times of trouble... TOUCH TREES!!!

Posted Image

Do you see any other Fish in this LP?

Posted Image

What the bacon?

Posted Image

:ermm: Look, I would just like to say that the kiddie pool chocolate pudding thing was just a dream I had once and-- err... never mind...

Posted Image

What's a Ra-Seru?

Posted Image

Well, of course, but you didn't answer my--

Posted Image

That's great, but--

Posted Image

Awesome. I mean it. But what's a-- okay, can we stop talking like this? You're making me dizzy.

Posted Image

Whoa, wait, you mean our power is directly linked to fighting spirit?! THAT I understand!

Posted Image

HECK YEAH!!!

Posted Image

And by "everyone" you mean "that one girl with the THO for me", right?

Posted Image

Yeah, we're fucked.

Posted Image

If you get my drift! :D

Posted Image

Curses! Anyways, speak with Mei...

Mei: Is that a Seru on your arm?!
Fish: Nah. It's a Ra-Seru.
Mei: What's a Ra-Seru?
Fish: *Shrug*
Mei: ... What's it do?
Fish: Well, I hit a little bit harder with it.
Mei: ... Huh. Okay.
Fish: Let's get everyone to the Genesis Tree.
Mei: 'kay!

Posted Image
Posted Image

I'm... gonna have to pass. These prayers might be fed on my Deathevan...

Posted Image

O... kay. Dunno how this is gonna help, but I'm willing to try anything once.

Posted Image
Posted Image
Posted Image

Whoa. Trippy.

Posted Image

BY THE POWER OF GRAYSKULL!!!

Posted Image

I HAVE THE POWAAAAAAAAH!!!

Well, the power of the revived Genesis Tree nukes the Seru monsters and the town is restored to right. Now for some more depressing stuff.

Posted Image
Posted Image

... WHAT?!

Yeah. The all-powerful, all-seeing god of Legaia's world is... *sigh* Rem. I wish I could say I photoshopped that... but I didn't. Anyways, the bodies are shipping out to sea and we're left with a touching moment for three people WE NEVER EVEN SPOKE TO.

Posted Image

Meanwhile, back with the plot...

Posted Image

I hate you, old man.

Posted Image

Short version: Mei's mom, Maya, is probably alive. Go find her.

Screw this noise, I'm outta here!

Posted Image
Posted Image

Hunter's Clothes get! This is your first body armor. You should also consider getting the boots from the shop (which raise both offensive and defensive stats). You should also try to get all the items from the shop before going too far, in all honesty, even if they are a touch pricey, but anything's better than nothing.

Posted Image

Mei thanks you again (if you're not a douche) and heads home.

Posted Image

As we enter the overworld map! HUZZAH!

See more next time as we follow the path to the Hunter's Spring and to Drake Castle!

Upon leaving Rim Elm you'll probably notice some elements that make the fighting system so unique. Short enemies, like the slimes, will be too low to be hit by high attacks and flying enemies, like the evil fly, will hover over low attacks. It makes you THINK! ZOMG!!! Anyways, once you collect all the armor pieces, we'll set off. Also worth noting is defense is broken up into two types: Upper Body and Lower Body. Fun, huh?

A short walk away is the Hunter's Spring, freshly liberated from the Mist!

Posted Image

I am awesome!

Posted Image

Hmm...

Posted Image
Posted Image

Tell me why you're grateful! BARK LIKE A DOG, BARD!!!

Posted Image

Sure, lawl.

Posted Image

A castle and a damn dam.

Posted Image

Dam!

So, to the castle! There's a whole lot of nothing outside it, so let's just run inside haphazardly!

Posted Image

When I was a little Jeff, this picture creeped me out and it shows up several times later in the game too. Please tell me I'm not the only one who sees the bat wings growing out of her head? Err... guys? Eeeeeeh... let's move on. :ermm:

Posted Image

Deeper within the castle, we find humans, possessed by Mist-mad Seru in cages. This was all a part of their plan to avoid being killed by Mist monsters yet avoid killing anyone themselves. Clever, except for the whole "I REJECT MY HUMANITY" aspect. Each section of the castle is blocked off by yet another key: Sunshine, Lightning, Star and Mountain, respectively. Enter the next area, enter the backrooms, get the key, unlock the door, scale steps, repeat from step 1.

Posted Image

In areas flooded in the Mist, the background will have the white, swirly clouds. Neat, huh? Also, in German "Mist" means "Crap". Ha-ha! Maturity!

Posted Image
Posted Image
Posted Image

'k.

Posted Image

Here, we have the return of the ever-so-lovely Gimards which made the prologue chapter a nightmare. With levels and equipment in tow, these guys are fodder. Also, enemies with an elemental icon next to their names can be absorbed by our Ra-Seru. Supposedly any physical attack has the chance of absorbing them, but I think hitting them with your Ra-Seru arm as the final step in the combo raises the chances of it working... at least I feel like it does. :-/

Posted Image
Posted Image

Magic starts at level 1 and levels up with repeated use up to a max of level 9 - along the way gaining special features at level 3, 5, 7 and 9. In the case of [Fire] Gimard, it reduces enemies' attack levels. Getting Gimard here is very helpful and is highly recommended, since even at level 1 it drops enemies here like stones for 10 MP a pop.

Posted Image

EVEN OTHER GIMARDS! BWA HA HA HA HA HAAAAA!!!

Posted Image

There's even a R & R room. HAH! OVER-ACHIEVER TIME!!!

Posted Image

Damn it! I was dreaming I was Spider-Man!

Posted Image

I'm aware.

Posted Image

Also aware. Thanks. Can I go back to being Spider-Man?

Posted Image

Right. Stellar. Write me a letter and I'll try to get back in touch with you by the end of the month. Ahh, yes... web-slinging...

Posted Image

Later in the castle, you'll find the Fire Book I. This unlocks Fish's first hyper art - Tornado Flame - a powerful attack that costs a whopping 30 AP but deals some mad damage.

Much, much later, we find the King of Drake Kingdom... King Drake!

Posted Image

NO! Moving on!

(In all seriousness, it just explains the whole "Put on Seru and lock ourselves away" subplot, which I've already explained so...)

Go out the back and walk a short trek to a mountain. Meta contacts Fish excitedly.

Posted Image
Posted Image

UNNECESSARY ZOOM! WHOOOOOO-OAAAAA-WHOOOOO-OAAAAAA!!!

Posted Image

Ho-hoooh? A new party member? Awrighty. I think some Seiken Densetsu 3 is in order!

Posted Image

Vanity, thy name is Angela.

Posted Image
Posted Image

Mom, did you lock yourself in the closet again?

Posted Image

Well, as much fun as it's been to watch Mother-of-the-Year psychologically torment her estranged daughter, it's time for the game to resume.

Posted Image
Posted Image

Th-there was... fanfiction! Horrible, horrible fanfiction!!! A FATE WORSE THAN THE MIST!!!

Posted Image

Well, the wolf has signed up for "Mother-of-the-Year" too, apparently and tells Angela to remember EVERY SINGLE BAD THING THAT HAPPENS. NO MATTER WHAT. Great advice, really...

Posted Image

Now you're calling her an idiot? What is wrong with you people?! Err... wolves... thing... whatev...

Posted Image

QUIZ TIME! YAAAAAAY!

Posted Image

Plot device!

Posted Image

DANDELION!!!

In between each question, Terra walks further down the cave and you go after her. Throughout the cave are mushrooms. Collect them.

Posted Image

I refuse to make any obvious illicit substance jokes because those are below me. These are, however, the only healing items you'll get as Angela and you'll want all you can get since you don't share Fish's backpack (you do, paradoxically, share his gold pouch...)

Posted Image

MOUNT RIKKUROLLA!!!

Posted Image

LP RICKROLL!!!

Posted Image

She's never even been exposed to the sun?! Holy crap, that girl's gonna have serious issues...

Posted Image

'k, lol. First you mentally scar her, now we're gonna PHYSICALLY scar her! You sick bastards...

Posted Image

Angela is fast - starting with 4 moves by default and 5 when she spirits (6 as soon as she hits level 2! Fish can get 4 when he spirits!). The trade-off is generally lower offense and defense, though, but it makes her useful.

Posted Image

And one of her victory poses is to jump up and down and giggle excitedly.

I should've named her "Rem"...

Posted Image

Terra then mentions how she has "something important" to tell Angela, but a massive earthquake interrupts the moment.

Posted Image
Posted Image

Unfortunately, the Mist blows in too, bringing with it Seru monsters. You just have to hope for the best and catch up with Terra ASAP!

Posted Image

Once you do catch up, she joins you as a computer-controlled ally who'll heal you whenever your health dips below half. This is a good chance to get Angela a few levels, at least...

After you leave the cave, head down an eastern corridor to find a little secret.

Posted Image
Posted Image
Posted Image

Posted Image

Terra turns out to be okay, but crippled by the thick Mist blocking off their access towards the generator. Apparently Ra-Seru are Mist-resistant but massive amounts harm them anyways... hm.

This area is very easily missed (since the player already knows Fish is going to be at Mt. Rickroll anyways) but you can nab Angela's first weapon in this little area.

Posted Image

Wewt. Now, head back south on the "proper" path and go through a cave. Several times stalactites fall from the ceiling, but you'll automatically avoid them as you go.

Posted Image

Along the way, you'll also find two "Water" items. These are rare, but incredible stat-up items. See, one thing that Legaia has going for it is that while there are, generally speaking, fewer items and armor types throughout the game, each tends to be more potent than it's standard-issue-RPG counter-parts. Example being that the game's most basic healing item (Healing Leaf) heals a whopping 200 HP. Compare to most game's "Potions" which tend to heal about 1/4 of that. Also, the level ups effects tend to be more dramatic as well, making this game less of a grind-fest at certain parts. What Legaia lacks in "ZOMG PRETTY GRAFFIX" it makes up for in intuitive game design.

Posted Image

Oh, poop. A miniboss.

Posted Image

'k, lol.

Posted Image

The Golem is not a difficult fight, thanks to Terra's presence. The weird part here is I can't see a way to actually LOSE this fight. Most of the Golem's attacks are aimed at Terra (who has unlimited HP) and they tend to do way less damage to Angela, the most notable example being the Jagged Earth attack, which does close to 150 HP damage to Terra, but about 1/3 of the amount to Angela. Also, when your health dips below one half, Terra heals you to full. I really don't think you can lose this fight.

After this fight, a really weird glitch occurred causing the words "ERROR WRK3" to appear in the upper-left corner of my emulator screen. What the hell that means, I'm not sure, particularly as I'm playing straight from my legit copy of the Legaia disc. However, the error message disappeared as soon as I entered a random encounter so it must not have been anything devastating. It did, however, make my screencaps look gaudy so I'll simply paraphrase what happened next.

Terra: I'm not your real mother.
Angela: *GASP!*
Terra: I'm also not a real wolf.
Angela: *GASP!*
Terra: I'm the Ra-Seru on the wolf's head.
Angela: *GASP!*
Terra: I found you abandoned on top of Mt. Rickroll, so I possessed the wolf and raised you.
Angela: *GASP!*
Terra: And I'm pregnant - and you're the father!
Angela: *GASP!*
Terra: Actually, I lied about that last one.
Angela: Oh.

Or something like that.

Posted Image

Outside is Mt Rickroll's Genesis Tree! Much like the one in Rim Elm, we can revive it and drive the Mist away from this region!

Posted Image
Posted Image
Posted Image

Every time an RPG character says "There's nothing to fear" something bad happens. It's a law or something.

Posted Image
Posted Image

Another amusing glitch (as it turns out, Legaia is among emulators' least-favorite games to run, even from the disc) Zeto appeared here and then did this really over-exaggerated animation over and over for a good solid 60 seconds. I was afraid the game had crashed and that Zeto would continue pelvic thrusting in my direction until I did something, but eventually, the game resumed.

Posted Image
Posted Image

ALL HAIL THE MIST! SERU POWER! SERU POWER!!!

Posted Image

He then summons up a creature by the name of Caruban.

Posted Image
Posted Image

Right. Because calling it "Seru slave of evil" is a great way to endear yourself to the giant lion with wings.

Posted Image

Told ya.

Posted Image
Posted Image

Well, they're pretty much dead.

Posted Image

Scale the mountain, young Fish! Funnily enough, you can find Fish's second weapon, which has its name derived from the main character's name. Hence I obtained an item called the "Fish Fist".

I lol'd, mightily.

Up the mountain as both Angela and Fish, you probably noticed a flying bat-like monster named [Holy] Vera. You'll want to absorb one because it's the first healing spell in the game. Angela can't get it (yet) but Fish can.

Posted Image

Oh. In spite of taking a good 10 minutes to get up here, they're not dead yet. Well, okay, that's fine too.

Posted Image
Posted Image

Terra: What sort of name is "Fish"?!
Meta: I was in a bind! I didn't have much choice!
Fish: I am the shit. B-) Oh yeah.

Posted Image

The game's first true "boss", or at least I consider it to be, since you can actually lose against him and neither Rim Elm nor Drake Castle had a 'boss' fight of any type.

Caruban is a newb-buster in that if you come unprepared, you might as well start the entire game over since there's little to nothing you can do once Caruban's in sight. However, preparing yourself for this fight is easy if you got Gimard and took advantage of Drake Castle's grind-tastic recovery room. In fact, three level 9 shots of Gimard will kill Caruban and even fewer will be necessary if Angela's at least level 3. Lacking Gimard or Vera is asking for Caruban to turn Fish into 180 pounds of sushi and Angela into... umm... angel food cake. Yeah.

Posted Image

Bury me not by the lone Genesis Treeeeeeeeee~!

Posted Image

Wewt.

Posted Image

I'm good at this part! :D

Posted Image
Posted Image

BLARGH! MY EYES!!!

Posted Image

Whoops. My mistake.

Posted Image

There we go!

Posted Image

EXCELSIOR!

Posted Image
Posted Image

The people in Drake are liberated from the Mist! Huzzah!

Of note, with each Genesis Tree your Ra-Seru "Levels Up". The thing is, this is little more than an aesthetic change (or maybe the Ra-Seru arm does more damage or maybe you absorb magic easier? I dunno.) as your Ra-Seru will grow larger in size.

Posted Image
Posted Image
Posted Image

Terra then uses the tree's power to transfer to Angela's arm (which also unveils Angela is left-handed... I dunno, I thought it was a nice touch...)

The wolf turns around and leaves instead of, y'know, eating Angela or something.

Posted Image
Posted Image

Sure, why not? Might invite some lulz.

Posted Image

Sure, let's do that. Hopefully get mad rewards and not something stupid like... a single key maguffin. Because that'd really suck - y'know - liberating an entire kingdom and not even getting access to the royal treasury or at least a couple thousand gold, y'know? ... Fawk.

See you next time!
