How many of you think the US could "win" a tariff war with China?

That's a tough one. Buy American would be good however it would take some time to ramp up our production capabilities and there would probably be a shortage of factory workers. Of course prices would escalate.

I'm not sure how one would address this in a one or two sentence frame. I think that America would fair better than the Chinese. China has immense poverty in it's outlying areas and the country is unable to feed it's population without imports. Without the American market place then there would be tens of millions of factory workers and associated parts manufacture workers out of work and factories idled. And the world marketplace could not support the overflow of products left in the pipeline.

In America millions of retail, transportation and so forth workers would be idled. And chaos would prevail as consumers couldn't get their shopping fix. We have the natural resources, energy resources and infrastructure that China lacks. We could be a self absorbing balanced nation able to meet the needs of our citizens, China isn't able to make the same claim.

Americans can live without most of the consumer imports, and we can feed our nation, provide energy for our nation and we are better suited to withstand a long term trade war. Granted the standard of living and deficit would both suffer.

Factories would begin deteriorating in China while new ones popped up here adsorbing workers displaced. As time wore on our economy would begin resembling a time before factories left for foreign lands.

Wages would rise in America to compensate for higher prices.

I'm rambling here. My answer is short term we would hurt and so would China. Long term the scale would show America fairing better and better. Yes, We could win.

I don't share your view of China's vulnerability. I believe China exceeds our ability to become self sustaining and "self sustaining" is no longer a economic goal.

Be that as it may you are talking decades to regain lost industries. In short you are talking about beggaring a nation to cater to those whose industries are now of little matter.

I'm not interested in debating who would win a war when we are all living in a world. I'm sure China has it's problems but that's hard for me to focus on because I am not there.

I'm offended by the fact that the rest of the world views the USA as a free country. Because they are not here, they are looking at the freedom the US has on paper. So much fluff printed up around the year 1776 when the US enslaved people from Africa and didn't treat those from China and Ireland much better.

I'm more offended by the fact that even those living in the USA with the tyranny happening right in front of their faces, ,, refuse to see it, close their eyes to it and deny it to the point they praise the worst offenders. Terrorists in every way shape and form are touted as hero's keeping us safe from who?, themselves?

This will be the death of humanity.

It's emerging industries you should be focused on. The theft of intellectual property is another issue tied up in the trade dispute. China has never been good in modern times with innovation. Their system doesn't support risk taking. China loses for so many reasons, this is but one more to add to the stack.

The Chinese economy depends on exports. Without the exports their economy will collapse and they know it.

They are depending on the left wing USA haters to make the US fold before it happens.
