Here is one of the leading contenders for Canada's new leading edge fighter - the SAAB Gripen F.

It's to be built to the highest NATO standards, and work in concert with virtually every other country's equipment. Truly state of the art.

So why don't we have it now? Because SAAB is not ready to fill any new orders for a least a couple of years...
The first ones beyond Sweden itself are scheduled to be delivered to Brazil in 2019.

As I understand it, whether the deal goes through or not depends upon timely delivery, and that applies to its competitors as well.

"Over the next decade." No need to buy second rate equipment if Trudeau is willing to do a deal with Trump. I'm sure, the U.S. would be willing to sell what you need. The good technology and equipment is out there. Someone had to spend to design, create and build it. That costs. Sometimes you just can't get by cheap. Had Canada built toward it's 2% starting back in the 1990s is would be there by now at a much lower cost. The enemies of the west must may not wait for a decade for NATO to modernize as an alliance.

Yeah well, we had a conservative style Liberal government back then, followed by a true Conservative one, and you know how conservatives are - penny wise, pound foolish...

The F18 Super Hornet from the US was in the race until recently, but the US's threatened tariffs against Bombardier and Trump's latest tirades may have knocked down their chances a bit.

So was the F35, in fact we had some money down on it, but I think it priced itself out of the market, esp with the same problems the F18 had with tariffs, etc.

Is Sweden a conservative government?

Add: Greece is very socialistic (liberal policies), and poor to boot, and yet it managed to expend 2% of its GDP to military defense.

Ban, you're missing a piece of information. The Greeks count everyone who wears a uniform (like Athens city police) or works in Intelligence in their country as part of their NATO force. NATO lets them get away with it because they're dead broke.

If Canada counted CSIS, the RCMP, the Ontario and Quebec police forces, plus the security teams that patrol the far north, we'd probably be over the 2% too.

I think it's easy to be lax when you share the border with the most powerful country in the world. Canada has allowed it's military to wane and has not had to take threats seriously for over a century.
