Canada's supply management dairy system is better than the U.S. dairy system. The U.S. system contributes $22.2 billion in subsidies to its dairy sector annually. U.S. milk producers dumped 100 million gallons of surplus milk. They sell their milk below cost and the tax payer picks up the tab. U.S. dairy farmers have lost money every year for the past decade. About 3/4 of the price those farmers sell their milk at comes from the U.S. government. U.S. dairy subsidies are even greater than EU dairy subsidies. There is a glut of milk on the world market. That's not Canada's fault. Canadian dairy farmers earn a decent living. Canadians have a stable supply of dairy products without pouring excess down the drain and Canadian consumers are largely okay with paying the price to support a system that works for Canadians. Canada runs a dairy trade deficit with the U.S.. In 2016 Canada imported $1 billion worth of dairy products from the U.S. and ran a dairy trade deficit of about $735 Million. Canada isn't hurting the U.S. dairy system. The U.S. dairy system is hurting itself. https://www.theguardian.com/world/commentisfree/2018/jun/09/milk-canada-us-trade-war https://www.realagriculture.com/2018/02/u-s-dairy-subsidies-equal-73-percent-of-producer-returns-says-new-report/ https://www.theglobeandmail.com/report-on-business/a-guide-to-understanding-the-dairy-dispute-between-the-us-andcanada/article34802291/ https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=3&ved=0ahUKEwibp626osfbAhU2JDQIHdVTCvgQFghFMAI&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.milk.org%2FCorporate%2FPDF%2Fnews-DairyIndustryFacts.pdf&usg=AOvVaw0tUvax7S43f0-P-U5ggzam |

Shame on you, Stoned! Those aren't the facts Berton wants! He wants the REAL facts - the ones that support The Liar-in-Chief's anti free trade story, |

Pat, do you mean that Brewster, Stoned, and Sea Dog don't know what they are talking about? Or is it that they are drinking the left wing kool-aid? According to the Canadian Broadcasting Company: Canada levies a tariff of 270 percent on milk, 245 percent on cheese and 298 percent on butter in an effort to keep imports out and tightly control supply. Trump calls for elimination of tariffs, end to US being world's 'piggy bank' June 9, 2018 CNN Average tariff for imported goods: "Recent World Trade Organization data shows that America's average tariff for imported goods is 2.4%. Canada's average tariff for imported goods is 3.1%, and the EU's average tariff for imported goods is 3%. That's: Canada - 3.1% EU - 3.0% US - 2.4% So, either even it up or do away with tariffs all together. That's FAIR TRADE! --- take it or leave it. Edited by Banandangees, Jun 10 2018, 02:25 PM.

It's not unusual Berton for those you listed to get it wrong. I would however have thought that when it came to a Canadian issue like this they would have investigated and dug up the facts, before spouting untruths. When Trump came out and said the days of the United States being piggy banks to the trading partners, he was serious. |
