Brewster,

Explain the point of this thread being the OP, are you trying to say global warming is caused by humans, like yourself?

What are you trying to say posting it?
Don, the OP doesn't talk about causes, it talks about effects.

The big thing that it's pointing out is, everyone who tells you Global Warming is "wrong" or a "scam" because some little area is colder than usual for some short period of time is either completely wrong or is simply flat out lying. Yes, cold records are still being set, and some areas become cold for a while, but the cold bits are completely overwhelmed in the whole picture.

As for is "It caused by humans?", of course it is. The latest calculations say that humans (including me) account for 101% of the warming.

How can it be 101%? Easy - before we went on our Carbon rampage, natural forces were pushing the Earth down a long, slow road toward an ice age, about 1% a year. We'd have been in an Ice Age in about 20 to 50,000 years. All those natural factors are still in play. So we are not only causing the warming, but we're also overpowering the forces of nature.

You keep bugging me about what I'm doing personally - maybe you're one of the few people on this board who don't read the other board, so I will repost what I said there...

I've just finished upgrading every other part of our lifestyle - maximum effort Energy Star appliances, LED Light bulbs and TV's, and a new, heavily insulated Condo Apartment. (The apartment is so well insulated that the heat from our bodies, cooking and the slight heat from the Big Screen TV's supplies enough warmth that the heating system has rarely turned on, even when the outside Temperature has dropped below 0*F)

In November, my total monthly energy bill, including heating, lighting, and all appliances, was $5.27 (Plus the usual scam "Distribution" and "Administration" costs.) - and even that bit of electricity came 100% from Wind Power!

And I just got even better news - my local Hyundai dealer has a sale on - $10,000 off on a Sonata Plug In Hybrid, very similar in performance and efficiency to the Volt, but bigger... (Hey, that's important when you're 6'4" and 235 lbs.) My best estimate is that I could drive essentially emissions free for less than $20 per month!

It would seem to be ideal for a "Climate Hawk" like me - an "Affordable" near zero emissions vehicle to complete my Perfectly Green World...

So why aren't I racing out to buy one? No Money is No Money.

All those other purchases will keep me paying until late summer 2017... Until then, I'm driving my old Chevy.

As my quote should make clear, I am switching over to Clean, Green Sources as fast as I can, and in spite of what Denialists say, it's actually SAVING me money - but I won't quit until I have that Plug-in car, and I really WON'T be contributing to Warming.

And the switch will do the same for anyone else as well. I think if others were doing even close to what I am, the whole AGW thing would be solved.

And the economies for both our countries would be in far better shape than they are now...
Brewster,

A $5.27 electric bill is mind boggling low, but different worlds understand that. Our current bill being all electric is low now with the AC not running 24/7 because of the nice weather and is still low $200’s with 1900 s/f under air (2400 including the garage but on a separate thermostat controlled damper not needed with the cool temps) and all the upgrades that can be done to a home built in 75’. With the exception of foam filling the concrete block cells everything that can be has been done, A/C, windows, R60 attic insulation, all new appliances and LED lights besides florescent shop lights in the garage. We do have a pool though that is around $50 of the bill running 5 hours a day now compared to 10 hours during the hot months. Another thing that jacks our bill up is the washer and dryer constantly running with a wife and 3 daughters and our electric rate isn’t the cheapest but average nation wide at around 12 cents a kWh with all of the charges.

Sonatas’ are nice cars and looked at the plug-in specs and like it, similar to the Fusion in a lot of ways including cost but a 10 KW battery and 27 miles of EV range. When I bought our Fusion 6 months ago it was factory discounted $9000 with 3 year lease terms nobody could touch at the time and that is what made me take the plunge and love the car! Since day one it is still averaging 58-59 mpg with my daughter having it at school for 2 weeks without the ability to charge it while I worked on her car. My wife’s Pathfinder lease ends 8/18 and she will drive the Fusion for a year while I hunt for the next best EV deal. I’m still waiting on my electrician to get power to where I want the level 2 charging station that will require a fair amount of work and decided to install a 100 amp sub panel because I can see both of us driving an EV in the near future, not to mention our younger kids will both be driving in less than 5 years.

Pat, we installed 100’s of new can lights (recessed) with LED trims this year on remodels and a of couple additions, I know the last large remodel had 48 alone and have been installing them with LED trims for the last 6 years seeing all of the problems especially noise and dimmers switch conflicts that seem to be working themselves out with the products advancing.

A new problem we’re seeing here with time on cans with LED trim on dimmer switches is the neutral wire can housing sheathing becoming brittle and falling apart, we have 8 in our kitchen I installed (my electrician) 7 years ago and every one of them is doing it.

I’m not an electrician much less an electrical engineer, just a dumb GC, and from what I’m being told it is caused by the ‘harmonics’ of LED bulbs.

Over my head…

Yes, the $5.27 is extremely low - much lower than I had been expecting. But do keep in mind that is the actual power consumption - my bill allows me to subtract the inevitable "Administration" etc fees. In fact, my monthly bill is around $55! There is something wrong when the fixed fees are 10 times the consumption costs!

Do keep in mind that my apartment is less than half the size of your place, we don't have a pool, there's only the two of us, and we certainly don't need A/C in Calgary in November!

My bill for consumption in August, with A/C running every day & not all the upgrades in place, was about $55.

It also helps that our Electricity cost is just over 6 1/2 cents per Kwh (I pay an extra cent for Wind power - that differential is coming down every year - it used to be 3 1/2 cents! I've heard rumours that it will disappear entirely in another year...)

Transition to cleaner energy and use less of it. There's your solution.

A Simpler Way: Crisis as Opportunity-

A Simpler Way: Crisis as Opportunity is a free feature-length documentary that follows a community in Australia who came together to explore and demonstrate a simpler way to live in response to global crises.

Throughout the year the group build tiny houses, plant veggie gardens, practice simple living, and discover the challenges of living in community. This film is the product of hours and hours of footage that I shot during that year-long experiment in simple living.

"A simpler way."

Sounds like communal living... "collective homesteading." Kumbaya! They're doing that in parts of Africa. We tried it somewhat in the 50s and 60s.

What is sad is that kind of living is what the alarmist want for all of us. With the government in control making us do it.
