It was about 30 minutes on the subway vs. more than an hour to Bronx. Anything beat going to the local high school - Newtown.
My local H.S. was Tottenville on the south-western tip of Staten Island. Instead I commuted two hours each way to mid-Manhattan and back each day. My brother had had a similar commute. So, it didn't seem so weird to me at the time. Since I was active in athletics, I usually didn't get home until 7 pm.
WOW! I don't think I've ever met anyone who actually lived on Staten Island! When I was working with AT&T at 10th and 54th we had guys who took the train in from Philadelphia and Montauk, but no one who took the ferry from Staten Island. I think most people who live in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens or the Bronx don't really consider Staten Island to be part of the city. It's always seemed to be more a part of Jersey.

We went to private schools, our children the same, and the same for the grand kids. There was no K for me.
Do you think Pat, that your private school education
is a contributing factor to your being a staunch right winger
with very little empathy for the problems of the common folk?

Why do you keep posting such insulting lies. Oh wait, you are a Canadian. That explains it.

Well, of course, until the Verrazano–Narrows Bridge opened in '64, there were three bridges from the Island to New Jersey and the only links to New York were the ferries to Manhattan and Brooklyn. I was among the hordes of Staten Islanders riding the ferry back and forth to Manhattan daily.

After I went off to Ohio to university, when I first returned home to the Island, I found that I felt more at home on the ferry than I did in my parent's house.

Not at all. I think my education helped develop my reasoning and logic skills. My world view comes from the experiences in my life and careful observation. Also, the fact that I ditched organized religion for reality, I don't buy into guilt scams nor do I believe I owe anybody else something based on a religious guilt trip. I do believe in charity and give to those I chose to give to.

I was amazed that, the last time we were in NYC, the ferry was still only 5 cents. Now I understand it's free. Cheapest tour of the lower harbor around. My parents would drive down the Belt Pkwy every few weeks to watch the construction of the Verrazano, but I don't recall our ever driving over it.

When in NYC most recently, we stayed in an RV Park/Marina in Jersey City. We could take a small ferry across to the World Trade Center. It was odd to be looking at the Statue of Liberty's backside.
