Ban, Why don't you hire and bring out some of those incity people you always talk about helping and make your estate productive? Grow and sell food, give some people a better life on your place, get others good food cheap? I would guess you could use several people and have room for their families, give them a better life. You have all that wasted land, waste of capital being an elite and living off capital. Not very Christian, keeping the poor in the city and passing the suffering on to the next generation, while you live in comfort on your estate.

Ban, Skills are being moved into machines for many, maybe most jobs, don't need to keep many of the workers, never will again. Save the few, get rid of the rest????

I thought you were talking about your business. I'm retired from private business and not looking to start another. But aren't we getting away from your original question? |

Ban, Retire and guarding your pile of capital, busy guarding your life style! Wouldn't want to have to deal with those "poor" people in your life on a daily life, leave them ghettos, where they belong.

Then you have to recognize the pros and cons of the future that your business is in. As far as "investor" goes, I suppose I'm addressing more of a single owner, small business type such as you and I are/were in and not a public business where fiscal "investors" other than yourself are of concern. Once you go public you lose control to investors and a board of directors as to decision making. I personally would have never considered going public (a good friend of mine did and regretted it), nor would I consider even a partner. |

How old are you? I'm 80 and have other considerations. I had no "poor people" working for me. They all made good, livable wages, most well above average.... with complete benefits. Are you going to work till you die of old age? If you do, that's your choice. Like Kenny Rogers said, "you've got to know when to hold them and know when to fold them. My business was taken over by one of my employees who wanted the responsibility and the workers continued.... and with good wages and benefits and a retirement for the more long term employees to feel financially secure if they don't become too fiscally liberal. |

Ban, I'm in my late 60's, and have no intention of taking a huge pile of capital and retiring to an estate in the country, while commuting to the city to do "the Christian" thing.

You sure make a lot of assumptions about someone you don't know. You also have strayed considerably from your OP of "excess workers you don't need." Apparently you have found yourself with excess workers you don't need. I just tried to give you one possible answer, thinking that you are in some sort of construction business, perhaps with need of some skilled workers who might be hard to replace and some nonskilled workers who might be easy to replace. I think your question originally was, what to do with the excess, unneeded workers.

How did Christianity get into your thread Corky? You've strayed from your original question. What's your purpose? Your a private businessman. Totally working for the people and their well being, with no intentions of or expectations, or desire to make a "pile of capital" for yourself. You could be "a government" in yourself.... working for the people with no fiscal ambitions for yourself... sort of a "Clintonian thing." My hat's off to you. |

Ban, It all has to do with outlook, people who make the system seem so great and see it as both fair and good. People who see capital as an end not a means, who "feel" for the poor as long as the stay in their place. The system is what makes the worker units and the elite both. You fight any change, rather than seeing change as normal, part of life.
