This ship is participating in NATO's Operation Reassurance in the Black Sea which is part of NATO's show of support to the former Soviet states in northern Europe subsequent to recent Russian incursions into the Ukraine. |

"NATO's Operation Reassurance!" I heard on one of the TV news networks yesterday (I think it was a discussion on CNN) that Putin is not so much interested in the Ukraine (which is not a EU nation) as he is the Balkan states (which are EU nations on the Baltic Sea). They said that the EU nations are is such disarray with literally no significant collective, unified military power in terms of dealing with Russia. That Putin may press on in the Ukraine with his eyes really on the Balkan nations, knowing that the EU will not do anything about the Ukraine and/or the Balkan nations without the U.S., and that Putin knows that Obama, as a lamb duck president in his last few months, will not be looking to engage Russia. Lets face it, NATO is insignificant without the U.S. in terms of military confrontation with the likes of Russia. Putin knows when to play his cards, when and how to "test the waters." If Obama was going to confront Putin concerning the Ukraine or the NATO nations of the EU he would have done it by now. And history tells the world that Russian winters are not the time to engage in conventional war against Russia, in Russia's geographical area. It's become a chess game and the Russians are usually good at chess and bold enough to use it's pons..... like Syria.' I think Putin is holding the best hand. He can play it or not. Or, just "test the waters and see where it goes." |

I don't know what you thought you were posting, Thump, but it's minor disease, usually affecting children, that gradually fades. Hardly worth the commentary. Viral diseases like this are quite common in the close quarters of any ship, Military, Civilian or Cruise vessels, regardless of the country of origin. The latest news:

I think your analysis is essentially correct, Ban, although I don't think the EU is quite as weak as you make out. I DO agree that Putin is "Testing the Waters". But that's SOP for him at all times, not just when facing a Lame Duck President. |
