31 Science Groups To Congress: Stop Denying And Start Fighting Climate Change
In a blunt letter to Congress, 31 leading scientific societies reaffirmed the reality that humans are causing climate change and only we can stop it. “To reduce the risk of the most severe impacts of climate change, greenhouse gas emissions must be substantially reduced,” they write.

Yes, this is the umpteenth report from scientists — see, for instance, “Climate Scientists: We’re Alarmed. Here’s Why You Should Be, Too” and “IPCC Scientists Emphasize Immorality Of Inaction By Focusing On ‘Irreversible Impacts’.” Heck, it’s not even the first letter to Congress from most of these groups — 18 of them wrote a similar letter back in 2009.

But as long as the media still gives presidential candidates (and pretty much every other major politician) a free pass on this most preventable of existential threats to America, scientists will have to keep “reminding” policymakers of the broad scientific understanding about human-caused climate change.

After all, if you are a smoker, and your doctor told you a long time ago to quit or you’d start getting a bad cough and worse, she doesn’t stop telling you to quit when you show up years later coughing with early stage emphysema.

“Observations throughout the world make it clear that climate change is occurring, and rigorous scientific research concludes that the greenhouse gases emitted by human activities are the primary driver,” explain the 31 scientific groups. “This conclusion is based on multiple independent lines of evidence and the vast body of peer-reviewed science.'”

The letter notes, “There is strong evidence that ongoing climate change is having broad negative impacts on society, including the global economy, natural resources, and human health.” Significantly, this statement is considerably stronger than a 2009 letter sent from scientific groups, which only warned of the impacts to come: “Moreover, there is strong evidence that ongoing climate change will have broad impacts on society, including the global economy and on the environment.”

Now the broad negative impacts are here, just as the scientific community predicted. What are they? “For the United States, climate change impacts include greater threats of extreme weather events, sea level rise, and increased risk of regional water scarcity, heat waves, wildfires, and the disturbance of biological systems.”

Each time we come back to the doctor, our cough is worse, and the doctor tells us the evidence is even more incontrovertible that smoking is making us sicker — and that it can get much, much worse if we don’t listen to her advice.

And so the country’s leading scientific organizations warn Congress, “The severity of climate change impacts is increasing and is expected to increase substantially in the coming decades.”
And they want us to know all these conclusions “reflect the scientific consensus represented by, for example, the U.S. Global Change Research Program, the U.S. National Academies, and Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.”

The good news is that it’s not too late for serious action to yield enormous benefits: “To reduce the risk of the most severe impacts of climate change, greenhouse gas emissions must be substantially reduced.”

Of course, too many in Congress still say, “But doc [cough], the tobacco companies [cough] say these coughs that keep getting worse [cough] have nothing to do with their product [cough].”

That’s why, in November, we need to elect people who aren’t in such denial.

I think Congress should do the will of the people rather than the will of scientists being paid by the government.

I know, I know, all those leftists are getting taken in by the Scientists's Scam

Let's hear from another Extreme Leftist Group:

Newsweek

Pentagon Report:

U.S. Military Considers Climate Change a 'Threat Multiplier' That Could Exacerbate Terrorism

A report released Monday indicates the Department of Defense has dramatically shifted its views towards climate change, and has already begun to treat the phenomenon as a significant threat to national security. Climate change, the Pentagon writes, requires immediate action on the part of the U.S. Military.

The report is a “roadmap” of the Department’s future needs and actions to effectively respond to climate change, including anticipating that climate change may require more frequent military intervention within the country to respond to natural disasters, as well as internationally to respond to “extremist ideologies” that may arise in regions where governments are destabilized due to climate-related stressors.

“The impacts of climate change may cause instability in other countries by impairing access to food and water, damaging infrastructure, spreading disease, uprooting and displacing large numbers of people, compelling mass migration, interrupting commercial activity, or restricting electricity availability,” the Pentagon writes. “These developments could undermine already-fragile governments that are unable to respond effectively or challenge currently-stable governments, as well as increasing competition and tension between countries vying for limited resources. These gaps in governance can create an avenue for extremist ideologies and conditions that foster terrorism.”

The military is integrating climate change considerations into all its operations, including in its training for war scenarios.

For the first time, perhaps ever, I agree with Berton!

Now, how are we going to get the Republicans to do what most Americans want, Berton?

On Edit: By The Way, Berton - you claim the government pays Climate Scientists obscene amounts of money. Assuming that's true (and that's quite a stretch, but we'll let it go for the sake of argument) what do you think the government pays them to do?

Edit Again: BTW, you're still on Ignore, except for this thread -

It's going to be too amusing to find out how you're going to diss the US Military for taking potential terrorist threats seriously, and how you'll explain why the government should pay scientists to do research, then ignore their findings... :haha: :brainfart:

They get paied the grant money to do the research the government wants done and to come up with the results they want.

The will of the people is that so called climate change is about the last thing they want Congress to do something about. It comes right after worrying if Canadians are peeing in their pants.

Great Going Bert!

You managed to ignore your own Military, claim the Republicans waste taxpayer dollars making scientists produce phony reports, insult the US's best friend and trading partner, and call the American people either dupes or outright liars, all in one post!

That's gotta be a record of some sort! :dontbe:

Geez Brewster, your lack of knowledge about the US is showing again. The military does what their CIC tells them to do. Like waste huge amounts of taxpayer money on "green fuel". When you come up with a reliable unbiased source for your information let me know. The LWEC does not count as unbiased or reliable.

As far a insulting Canada, that was intended. I am tired of you Canadians insulting the US without anyone pushing back at you.

Berton, you have just proven you are the lowest form of life on this board - you insult your American Generals by saying they haven't the guts to stand up to a President you yourself have claimed is "Weak" (another insult to America), insult American Republicans who approved the expenditure on Green Fuel when they approved the military budget, never apologized for insulting the American people, lied about the existence of a "LWEC" and even insinuated that the other Righties on this board are wimps who can't stand up to we Canadians for themselves. (In the process insulting Canadians again.)

All in one post!

You are no longer even amusing. Goodbye.
