On 'stunts' in the U.S. House

One of the things that makes our country strong is our institutions. No matter how bad things get in this country, we have a basic structure that ensures a functioning democracy. We can disagree on policy, but we do so within the bounds of order and respect for the system. Otherwise it all falls apart. I'm not going to dwell on the decorum of the House here today, other than to say we are not going to allow stunts like this to stop us from carrying out the people's business.

Why do I call this a stunt? Well, because it is one. Let's just be honest here. Here are some facts. Yesterday the House Appropriations Committee considered its bill for homeland security spending. At the committee, Democrats offered in committee an amendment offering the gun measure they say they want. That amendment failed on a bipartisan basis. … There was a vote, it was in the committee, in regular order, and the vote failed. That's a fact they didn't want to talk about.

Here's another one. If Democrats want to vote for a bill on the floor, there's a way to get one. It just takes 218 signatures on a petition and then they can have a vote. It's that simple. That's how the House works; it's a well-known process. But they're not doing that. They are not trying to get this done through regular order. No, instead they're staging protests. They're trying to get on TV. They are sending out fundraising solicitations. If this is not a political stunt, then why are they trying to raise money off this, off a tragedy? …

I have an obligation as Speaker of the House to protect this institution. We are the oldest democracy in the world. We are the ballast of the world of free people, and so when we see our democracy descend in this way, it is not a good sign.

— U.S. House Speaker Paul Ryan, speaking Thursday about the sit-in held by Democratic House members over gun control.

Dems want the US Congress reduced to a third world government.

You don't think 60 odd votes to repeal Obamacare is a "stunt"?

218 votes is a majority. The democrats don't have a majority. Since the GOP votres as a monolithic block that means there is no way to get such a majority. The republicans use their rules to lock all others out. The founders would be proud!

Hopefully by 2020 and redistricting that will be a thing of the past. With Trump in the race it might be a whole lot sooner.

No, rabblerousing on the House floor is a stunt. A silly childish stunt.

As opposed to sophisticated legislative stunts?

As apposed to the democratic operation of the House. I see as a progressive you can not tell the difference. So do you approve of what the Dems did in making fools of themselves and your party?

Only in your LWEC world. The rest of the world sees them for the fools they are.

I guess the polls showing 75% approval were just democrat fairy tales.
