I had a good friend that had a flame out on an old F86 target drone. He steered the aircraft into a golf course. Several civilians tried pull him out of the cockpit, but his straps had melted and they couldn't free him. He was alert the whole time pleading for help to get out. The fire consumed him. The airplane had just had major servicing and a piloted flight was required to certify the plane for remote control. The F86 had the old type ejection seat that ejected ballistically, no zero zero. He and I worked on a project to mount recoilless rifles on as P51 Mustang to use the airplane for interdiction. Fired the recoilless one time and bent every panel on the aircraft from over pressure. But I digress.

I can't think of a worse way to die than to be burned. Sorry.

We have heard of stories of lack of money for maintenance. I wonder if either one or both of these crashes were a result of that?

Definitely could be.

I don't think so Berton. I would almost guess these teams get better than average funding. Things happen.

I have read that the BA plane has landed twice during performances this year for mechanical problems.
I also read that the BA pilot did indeed stay with his plane to avoid hitting apartment buildings.

I don't know what block F18s the blues are using, but I was around when we converted the first fleet used jets to the blues. They were old then. But surely they had been uggraded since. I think the accident board will get to the source of the problem. The F18 has some degree of systems performance recording. Flying a jet as part of a demonstration team is certainly risky.

Still, he could have sucessfuly ejected in the last second. I bet there are videos of the crash.

You hear all kinds of stories at first, we will see.
I am wondering when they will perform again.

Yep, they will stand down until all deficiencies are resolved.
