Among Latinos, Bernie Sanders Bombs - And Donald Trump May Be Gaining Some Everything the open borders lobby assures will secure the Latino vote is among the offerings of socialist candidate Bernie Sanders. To roll up that vaunted vote, which political consultants insist is key to winning the election, Sanders has hired top illegal immigrant activists such as Erika Andiola and Cesar Vargas, he's offered amnesty for the millions, and he's spread out a table full of free stuff — just as Latin America's demagogues and dictators regularly do. There's just one problem: Latinos don't seem to want him . They've edged away from Sanders, with many favoring Hillary Clinton, and at least some, according to this report in the Washington Times, leaning to Donald Trump, who is supposedly so racist that there is no way he could ever attract a single Latino vote. After years of proselytizing about the importance of kowtowing to the Latino vote on immigration issues, Latino voters aren't necessarily behaving as consultants said they would. Far from being dogs running for the amnesty bone, plenty of them have other priorities far closer to those of other Americans, such as jobs, access to quality education and access to health care. By contrast, immigration is an awfully marginal issue — and in any case, would not directly affect — legal voters. And as for Bernie, his bad luck may well be because many Latino voters are well aware of his type in their former homelands — the white-haired leftist-ideologue university professor promising paradise without a featherbrained idea of how to pay for it. Such types have been famous for bringing demagogues such as Hugo Chavez, Fidel Castro, Daniel Ortega and plenty of other nightmares to power in recent years, and anyone who pays attention to Latin America has had a belly full of it. Bernie (who honeymooned in the Soviet Union) doesn't help his own pitch much by being actual pals with the likes of Chavez and Castro, as we documented here. Nor does Sanders offer anything in the way of youth or identification — his home state of Vermont is actually the least Latino state in the nation. Trump, by contrast, focuses on jobs, opportunity and pride. It goes to show that what the political class says Latinos want, and what the Latinos themselves want, may well be two different things.
