Petitions? nah

Letter writing campaign? nah

Getting a hold of your state legislator? nah

Hunger protest? Nah

The SEC football team refuses to play or participate in the sport until he is fired? Bingo!

The governing body of the University of Missouri will hold a special meeting on Monday amid ongoing protests over the handling of matters of race and discrimination at the system's flagship campus.

The University of Missouri Board of Curators announced in a statement Sunday night the group will meet Monday at 10 a.m. on the system's Columbia campus. According to an agenda provided in the statement, part of the meeting will be closed to the public.

The statement says Missouri law allows the group to meet in a private "executive session" to discuss topics such as privileged communications with university counsel or personnel matters.

A university system spokesman didn't immediately respond to question to the Associated Press about whether the group would address the status of University of Missouri System President Tim Wolfe.

Wolfe has been the target of protests by students, including a group of black football players who announced Saturday night on Twitter they will not participate in team activities until the school’s president resigns, and coach Gary Pinkel appears to be standing with his squad.

Wolfe has drawn fire on campus over what some Mizzou students say is his failure to address at least two incidents where black students have been subjected to racial slurs, the St. Louis Post Dispatch reported Saturday.

Wolfe, an alumnus of the university’s business school, has been president since February 2012.

On Sunday, he said in a statement that changes will come to address racially charged incidents at the school as part of a systemwide diversity and inclusion strategy and plan that's due to be announced next April.

Wolfe said that it's clear "change is needed" and that he appreciates the "thoughtfulness and passion which have gone into the sharing of concerns."

He added that the majority of items that Concerned Student 1950 listed in their demands were in the strategy that's being worked on.

Pinkel's verified Twitter account posted a picture of the team and coaches locking arms with the message: "The Mizzou Family stands as one. We are united. We are behind our players. #ConcernedStudent1950 GP."

The statement was tweeted out Saturday by several members of the football team, including starting running back Russell Hansbrough.

The Post-Dispatch reported that defensive backs Anthony Sherrils and Finis Stribling and linebacker Clarence Greene all retweeted the statement along with Hansbrough. Sherrils is a starter; Stribling and Greene are backups, according to a Nov. 5 depth chart on the ourlads.com scouting service.

Practice and other team activities were cancelled on Sunday, Pinkel and Missouri athletic director Mack Rhoades said in a joint statement.

"Our focus right now is on the health of Jonathan Butler, the concerns of our student-athletes and working with our community to address this serious issue," the statement said.

The decision to boycott aligns the team with some campus groups who have been protesting the way Wolfe has dealt with issues of racial harassment during the school year. Jonathan Butler, a black graduate student, is in the seventh day of a hunger strike to call attention to the issue.

The statement from the players included a photograph of 32 black men, including Butler. In the photo, two players have their arms linked through his.

The message reads: "The athletes of color on the University of Missouri football team truly believe "Injustice Anywhere is a threat to Justice Everywhere" We will no longer participate in any football-related activities until President Tim Wolfe resigns or is removed due to his negligence toward marginalized students' experience. WE ARE UNITED!!!!!"

Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon said the University must address the concerns over "racism and intolerance."

Butler has also expressed concern about other student issues, including the removal of graduate student health care subsidies and an end to university contracts with a Planned Parenthood clinic.

At homecoming, angry students blocked Wolfe's car in an attempt to speak with him about his handling of race matters. There have been complaints that the use of racial slurs on campus is prevalent. In April, a swastika was found in a Missouri dormitory, and officials said last month they were investigating another act of vandalism that targeted minorities.

The athletic department told The Associated Press Saturday that "we all must come together with leaders from across our campus to tackle these challenging issues and we support our student-athletes right to do so."

Wolfe met with Butler and student groups Friday to discuss the school’s handling of racial harassment cases. On Saturday, he was met by angry students at a fundraiser in Kansas City.

The students confronted him with shouts and demands after he was told to answer questions from the angry group, according to the Post-Dispatch.

But a former Democratic state lawmaker and former chairman of the University's Board of Curators defended Wolfe's campus leadership.

Longtime lawmaker Wayne Goode said Wolfe is "one of the best managers I've ever worked with." Goode also said Wolfe has "very strong support on the board," though he declined to indicate whether he had spoken with anyone on the board or with Wolfe.

Wolfe, 56, is a former software executive and Missouri business school graduate who grew up in Columbia and whose father taught at the university.

The campus of nearly 36,000 is mostly white. Approximately 17 percent of the student population identifies with a minority group, according to the university's website.

The Tigers have three more football games left on the schedule. Saturday's opponent is BYU.

The team played Thursday night, losing at home to Mississippi State, falling to 4-5 on the season.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

I guess we will see how important it is for Missouri to win. If the players have a legitimate gripe I think they are going about it the wrong way. They should yank the scholarships out from under those guys for refusing to play (breach of contract?) and go with what they have left if possible. The player should have approached the University's Board of Curators (Trustees?) and asked them to investigate.

This is a question of money and who gets it. The football players are acting as a unit of labor. This throws a huge light on what the hell major sports are to an "institute of learning".

That was quick--

"UM System President Tim Wolfe has resigned after a boycott from University of Missouri football players amid a string of racial incidents across the campus.

Wolfe confirmed his resignation Monday, saying, "My motivation in making this decision comes from love," per David Morrison of the Columbia Daily Tribune. "I love MU and the state of Missouri, where I grew up."

Prior to Wolfe's resignation, Missouri's Legion of Black Collegians posted a statement on the team's behalf—the team was not in action Saturday—along with a picture of players unified in support of the boycott:"

Since blacks make up 13% of our population only 13% of players on all college and professional teams should be black. That's fair and would make the 1950 committee happy..

This blacks are always victims BS is getting really old. Everyone of the football players who went on strike should have their scholarship pulled.

There is no evidence of the school chancellor doing anything racists except that he
didn't get out of his car and speak with angry blacks (The white truck driver who was beaten half to death at the start of the King riots is an example of what happens when you do this) and he refused to admit that he was hired because of white privilege (the knuckleheads have this confused with affirmative action that penalized you for being white.)

Liberal political correctness at work for all to see.

Those "principled" southern leaders fold like a tent when there is money involved.
