UmmmI said I wasn't going to bring up an abortion topic for awhile--and then I read this in the paper; I almost didn't open up the article based on the headline

Thanks Tom. The slide was aver 100 miles away from where we live. Did you read that in 1997 a geologist filed a report with the Army Corp of engineers that the area was dangerous and would slide? Of course zoning is local and money trumps all but this will unleash a flurry of law suits.

Okay, let's talk about mudslides and change the subject. Why doesn't WA prepare better for mudslides?

That explains it. Were those zoning boards made up of conservatives o liberals? My guess since the zoning was for contractors to make money that the zoning boards were made up primarily of conservatives.

If you go to any Master Plan committee hearing, Regional Planning Committee meeting, local Planning Committee meeting, the board is made up of realtors, developers, bankers, and utility companies. They grease the palms, donate to politicians and get rewarded with a spot on the board. It would open your eyes if you ever saw how your town and region is carved up and to whose advantage. lol

Look a little deeper into the slip up here and the politicians and board members are heading for cover. Of course they knew about the study, thye gambled and lost on this one. Why do you think the hillsides of SoCal along the coast are dotted with homes? Of course it's unstable and prone to falling in the ocean. Money talks.

Now the planning commission etc are saying that they told builders that the area was prone to slides and they were a possibility. However people hear what they want when making decisions.

The area was beautiful and offered great views. Why worry about something that "could" happen? When it does then it is human nature to blame others.

Zoning could have prevented it but money talks.

That and the fact that too many people refuse to believe anything that they don't want to hear. Climate Change deniers and smokers are prime examples

I was just thinking the same thing about climate change deniers. I do no think most of them are "liberals."
