Here in Michigan a lesbian couple are challenging the states defense of marriage law that passed by referendum a few years ago. A court decision has not been rendered, but it is highly likely the law will be declared unconstitutional. Surveys show there has been a dramatic shift in attitudes toward acceptance of gay marriage.

My dw has been a musician and music teacher for many years. And, has worked as a paid organist for several churches. Most of those she has played for are liberal leaning (UCC and Presbyterian). For the last few years she has been the paid organist for an Episcopal church in a nearby small city. Prior to her working there a big controversy had happened regarding the Episcopal Church's decision to accept openly gay clergy. And, about half the congregation left to start their own church in opposition to the decision. This is a quite conservative community.

My dw has several friends and confidantes at the church. Last Sunday the current priest (a woman in her 70's) asked to talk to her in private. She revealed she had been asked to perform a gay wedding, and confessed it was really against her beliefs, crossing the line between acceptance and condoning. And, she was in a quandary about what to do. She feared another big blowout splitting the congregation. Meanwhile my dw has another friend at the church who is a gay single guy. He is employed by the episcopal diocese, and travels around the state visiting other churches as part of his job. He told my dw Sunday that he had met someone, and it looked to be serious relationship, that might end up in marriage. Then the bombshell, the new boyfriend is a catholic priest.

I'm thinking, shades of soddom and gommorah. Is the world getting weirder, or are they just now more out in the open? :teeth:

I think it's the later Tom, more out in the open. Let me get this straight, according to the religious, god created the world and people in his image.Gay people, transgenders, straight, narrow, according to Facebook over 40 versions of human sexuality. And then this same god would use his church to deny them basic human rights and marriage? It doesn't make sense, this is more a homophobic reaction by do gooder's than anything else. Who cares who they love and marry?

Agree with Pat. However it's your church and your rules. If your church doesn't want to marry them in the chapel they can opt for a civil ceremony or perhaps the minister would be willing to marry them in their home.

No, the church is saying through the district administrator that they will perform gay marriage. Just the old girl that is the Priest of the local church has an issue with it. She is afraid some will leave. Of course if she refuses others will leave.

Perhaps, speaking from a "religious/spiritual" perspective.... a "Biblical" perspective..... the issues is more of "promiscuity." Promiscuity with gay or straight... an out-of-wedlock lustful life (we're all probably a little guilty of it in one form or another) vs actually loving and caring for someone and a willingness to commit to one another. I don't know. I don't feel that I want to be the first to cast a stone.... or even cast one at all.

The story of the activity in Sodom and Gomorrah was an "in your face," promiscuous activity, not someone loving another and committing to another. Would that be any different if the activity in Sodom and Gomorrah was heterosexual promiscuity? I suppose if a spiritual creator exists, he/she/it has the wisdom and clarity to weigh the difference in a just way. Meanwhile, we humans of different opinions will continue to quibble over what is right and what is wrong. Eyes of the beholder.

It does seem that the world has become a more promiscuous, in-your-face place... morally speaking.

Didn't the bible talk about multiple wives and knocking up your daughters when they get you drunk? (Job). Promiscuous behavior has always been with us. We just were less open about it.

I don't think or believe for a second that people are more promiscuous now than in the past. Monogamy is a fairy tale and people should not expect human nature to not play out. The human species is not monogamous anymore so than any other species.
