I believe it is criminal the way liberals managed taxpayer funds. Every single city and state facing bankruptcy happen to be cities and states with long term liberal politicians at the helm of councils, legislative functions and leaders. Chicago and Illinois, home to our first family are the poster child of this problem. How would you like to have your mayor come to you in your retirement and tell you that your property taxes would double? And services decline. Bloated public employee salary packages and benefits have broken the back of many American cities and states, so what now? What not to do is continue with liberal governing is my solution. They need a healthy dose of conservatism and belt tightening. http://www.breitbart.com/Big-Government/2014/03/12/Chicago-Mayor-Warns-of-Doubled-Property-Taxes-to-Fund-Spiraling-Pension-Costs Illinois has one of the worst pension messes in the nation as the cost of government employee benefits is sending state, county, and local governments into bankruptcy crises all across the state. No place has more trouble than Chicago, prompting Mayor Rahm Emanuel to warn that property taxes will have to double to serve that spiraling debt. In 2015 Chicago faces a looming financial disaster with a municipal pension system that is in worse shape than that of any other major U.S. city. Chicago is under the gun for a whopping $1.07 billion balloon payment on its $19.4 billion pension debt for city employees. Chicago's mayor is struggling to figure out how to pay the balloon payment, which is equal to one third of the city's entire budget. According to The Wall Street Journal, the balloon payment alone could pay for the salaries of the Chicago Police Department's entire 4,300 officer force or for the re-paving of all 16,000 blocks of roads in the city. The city fathers have made some furtive attempts to address the crisis. "Last month, Chicago's city council approved the issuance of $500 million in commercial paper and $900 million in general-obligation bonds purportedly to refinance existing debt and improve public works," the Journal reported early in March. "There's little to stop politicians from pouring the proceeds into pensions – or later reneging on this unsecured debt if it were to file for bankruptcy." The shortfall to the pensions amounts to $7,100 per Chicago resident. In any case, if something else isn't done, Mayor Emanuel is warning that he'll have to... |

I have relatives that worked for the city of Chicago and then the state, they gave them good jobs because they were Democrats and with very good pensions, now the taxpayers are being asked to pay for those pensions. I would move out of IL too. |

Speaking of Illinois, heard this one today. "Grandma vote Republican her whole life. Since she died, she has consistently cast a Democrat vote."

Question. Are those States receiving the most Federal welfare funds in the form of federal money far exceeding what those states pay into the federal government? Or, are those States paying for the Republican Welfare States? Perhaps Corky can shed some light on my question. |

Your first post wants to sway me thread away from the OP. Thanks for the 'disruption game' Colo. I wish you would have the decency to stick to the topic. |

Nice shot, but misguided, Pat. If those States nearing bankruptcy are the ones paying to keep other States from being bankrupt by receiving less from the Federal government than they Pay into the Federal Government while those States not "liberally" governed are the beneficiaries of Federal welfare from those States going bankrupt, I think it is definitely a part of the topic expressed in the OP. It simply puts the "problem" in real perspective. Sorry if you don't like my asking about the perspective. But, I honestly think the complaint about "disruption is misguided on your part. In fact, questioning my "decency" is a bit over the board as a personal attack. JMHO |

Many big cites and some not so big are in trouble. Sure it's about making promises they shouldn't have. But, that is only half of the problem. A lot of it is due to the decline brought about by lack of decent paying jobs. The jobs go away, people leave, property values drop, and along with it the revenue stream for the city spirals downward. It's a snowball effect. That's why Detroit is in bankruptcy now. This isn't just about dems/libs being to generous with the public coffers. It's also part of the offshoring of american that has made the financial wizards fabulously wealthy while screwing the country. And, the GOP can take a big chunk of the blame for that. |

The reason the jobs went overseas is because of the high cost of doing business in the USA. Both labor and taxes. Both high labor cost (read unions) and high taxes are liberal mantras. |
