16-YEAR-OLD STUDENT SUSPENDED FOR REFUSING TO TURN NRA SHIRT INSIDE OUT by AWR HAWKINS 12 Mar 2014, 4:01 AM PDT 35 POST A COMMENT On March 11th the parents of 16-year-old Shane Kinney confirmed "their son was recently made to serve a one day in-school suspension" for refusing to turn his NRA shirt inside out or change shirts altogether. Kinney is a sophomore at Grand Island High School in New York. According to WGRZ.com, Kinney and his parents are members of the NRA. The shirt he wore "[depicted] his support of the NRA and the 2nd Amendment of the U.S. Constitution." His dad said Kinney had worn "the same shirt" to school before without incident. However, this time a gym teacher took offense "to the NRA emblem over crossed rifles adorning the shirt" and Kinney was told to "either change shirts, or turn the one he had on inside out." Kinney refused, saying "he'd rather not turn the shirt inside out," and received one day of in-school suspension for violating dress code. Kinney's parents said the important lesson in all this "is to stand up for what you believe in." Follow AWR Hawkins on Twitter @AWRHawkins Reach him directly at awrhawkins@breitbart.com |

The article says he violated the schools dress code. But, didn't say what the code was. I'll guess it was no weapons depicted on clothing. You can't suspend a teacher for enforcing the rules. |

That too is speculation. I've read elsewhere about schools and teachers acting out their social views by forcing students to tow the mark. It would take a complete idiot to not recognize the crossed rifle logo of the NRA. It is as familiar as Coke. A logo does not incite violence. |

I am sure that a Gay Pride logo or a Swasitka would be met with the same request! |

I will buy the article's statement that it was a simple case of enforcing the school's dress code. If that is the case, there will be no successful lawsuit and certainly a teacher cannot be penalized for enforcing the school's dress code. |

Schools have dress code and students have to follow the rules. I also suspect that a large % of the population would not recognize the NRA logo. Personally I want my tax dollars spent on teaching and I have no interest in pre-adult free speech rights. If that's important to a parent then home school or pay for a private school that fits your belief structure. |

I know for a fact that, in the schools in which I work, if a student comes to school wearing a t-shirt with a picture of a marijuana leaf on it, that student either changes shirts, turns the shirt wrong side out for the day, or is suspended for the day. There has never been a lawsuit challenging the school's authority to enforcer the dress code. |

Are you now a public school student. Neut? Those seem to be the only lives affected by the enforcement of school dress codes. I suppose you would want to allow students to wear t-shirts to school proclaiming "ABORTION FOR EVERYONE!" On edit, I probably should let anyone who cares know that it was my wife who thought of the second portion of this post. Edited by colo_crawdad, Mar 13 2014, 02:04 AM.
