Yes, the only good thing to say about him is that he would have probably been better than what we have now. That is not saying much mind you.

Oh I think he would have been better, not necessarily his ideas but his experience.

One thing that is funny in all of this, the most sought after speaker and one who most were riveted to was Rand Paul. Those on the left hate the guy and what he advocates, yet when you attend a speech or rally with him and his dad before him, even the liberal spys who attend are shacking their heads in agreement on most of what he says. Try this experiment, write down the principles that libertarian and true conservatives adhere to. The next time you run into a staunch democrat/liberal bring up the points in conversations, not argumentative but ask them to truthfully think about what you said.

I'll probably get attacked for this next statement, I believe that it is American to have conservative and libertarian leaning.

Paul is interesting and I agree with most of what he says. But I disagree with him, and you too, when he thinks the US can be come isolationist. He doesn't seem to understand that the other side has a say so in if you can isolate yourself. While he would be much better than anyone on the liberal side who is in the picture today his isolationist policies would be a disaster in the long run in my opinion.

Isolation served us well during the period 1789 1917. Growth and prosperity. From the end of the Korean war until the build up and invasion of Vietnam we had another period of growth and prosperity. America's unique combination of geographical location and abundant natural resources set us apart, not unlike the much small in population yet economic robust Australia. Maintaining a strong enough military to discourage adventurism by others yet not breaking our bank is the balance I advocate. For foreign interests of American companies, let them hire mercenaries if need be. In another thread the difference of 16% (Canadian) and 24% (American) spending to GDP can be in my opinion, linked to the foreign policy that landed us in intractable wars overseas. Vietnam too was a coffers draining experience. We proper best when we quit policing the world.

Pat, we are spending less than 4% of GDP on the military, or will be under the latest cuts. You point to Vietnam yet we didn't have much of a military at all at the start of Vietnam. You say you advocate a strong enough military to discourage adventurism by others yet that is what is happening in the world today. When do do not look out for our world wide interests no one will. If you want to look at history to see where isolationism will take a country look no further than China starting in the 15th Century to the 20th Century. Look a Japan from 1641 to 1953. You talk about the US yet how do you explain the Monroe Doctrine? The attacks on the Barbary Pirates? Both of those examples would not have happened under your isolationism.

My guess is that Palin's approval ratings are higher than the president's.
She fell out of favor in Alaska. GW Bush's ratings are considerably higher than what they were during his presidency. If your not in office there is not much to criticize.

Paul,

Just for clarity you should probably revise that last sentence to read: If your not in office and not looking to get into office there is not much to criticize.
