Albertsons parent Cerberus to buy Safeway; Costco type stores a pain in their rear

We gave up on the standard grocery/drug store chains and focus on Costco and Whole Foods. Example---I bought a four lb. container of the biggest and most flavorful strawberries the other day at Costco for less than $8. And they didn't rot the day after buying them, they were fresh. Smith's had one of those small containers advertised on sale in the paper for $3. Reg. price $5. Better quality and less cost. Plus Costco pays a living wage and his workers that can solve problems and string together more than one sentence when you talk to them. The consumer knows what place has the best food and prices. My question to Safeway and Albertsons is this, why did you have to merge to do what companies smaller are already doing? Provide great prices and superior food?

Albertsons parent Cerberus to buy Safeway

Safeway has agreed to be acquired by an investment group led by Cerberus Capital Management, the owner several supermarket chains.

The acquisition is worth about $7.64 billion in cash, and pending other transactions could top more than $9 billion.

The deal, announced late Thursday, will bring together Safeway and Albertsons. Cerberus last year had bought the Albertsons stores it didn't already own from Supvalu Inc., along with four other Supervalu chains.

It comes amid ongoing consolidation in the supermarket industry, which is facing growing competition from big-box retailers, specialty chains, drug stores and even dollar stores. Kroger Co., a key competitor, recently snapped up regional chain Harris Teeter.

Safeway said in February that it was looking into putting itself up for sale. The Pleasanton, Calif.-based company has been trying to adapt for some time to increased competition and recently shed some of its smaller, less profitable units, such as its Canadian operations and Dominick's stores in Chicago.

The company has more than 1,300 U.S. locations under banners including Safeway, Vons, Pavilion's, Randall's, Tom Thumb and Carrs.

AB Acquisition LLC, which operates Albertsons, along with Acme, Jewel-Osco, Lucky, Shaw's and other stores, is owned by Cerberus and other investors. It operates more than 1,000 stores. Albertsons is based in Boise, Idaho.

Combined, the companies will have more than 2,400 stores, 27 distribution facilities and 20 manufacturing plants.

Safeway and Albertsons say the deal will allow them to better respond to customer needs and lower costs. They also expect to refurbish some stores and expand its product offerings once it is complete.

I understand that, for a while at least, Kroger, King Sooper's parent was thinking of buying one half of Safeway.

We don't have a Costco, but I've heard we are going to get one. Sounds like my kind of place.

On the whole foods. Are their prices a lot higher for things like grass fed beef?

I don't have the answer Neutral, way back in the early 80's a salesperson set an appointment with me and the office manager. The reason was to introduce us to Costco which had opened it's first warehouse store on 4th AVE. downtown Seattle. Store number 1. For a small yearly fee we could join and buy everything from toilet paper to copy paper cheap. Coffee for the office lunchroom too. I guess they figure that tradition allows them to continue. On another note, I knew the guy who owned the hotdog carts that were once stationed outside the doors. And I know the woman who formed the company that hires and gives away samples. She lost the deal when her and her husband split the sheets. One of the wildest divorce cases I have ever witnessed. lol. The hotdog guy spent twenty minutes bending my ear when he told me Costco had refused to renew his leases and were taking food sales in house. God he was pissed. lol. All I know now is that the place grew and matured and his a great place to do business with. Costco, Sams, and a few others have put the hurt on Albertsons and Safeway. May the best company win.

Their prices are very high Tom, we buy some stuff there but Costco has the same or better quality on alot of stuff. The wife likes the organic choices, even when I tell her that with GMO blowing in the wind along with fertilizer and every chemical imaginable, the term organic is BS. So I tag along and keep my mouth shut.

I've read the grass fed beef is a lot healthier. Feed lot beef living in crap pumped full of antibiotics can't be that good for you.

I've heard the same thing. Someone said that little girls are maturing faster due to the hormones in meat that make the cow mature faster.Less time to maturity means it takes less food to grow the cow. And i read all that antibiotics that we ingest from meat makes us less able to use antibiotics to fight bugs. And then walk into a convenience store and you have to maneuver past the multiple candy and chip aisles to get to the beer.

We haven't a COSCO within about 150 miles. Maybe someday. We do have a Sam's about 50 miles away but we don't patronize it. What am I going to do with a gallon jug of maraschino cherries? Makes a ton of Bourbon Manhattans.

That is the problem Thumper for us as well. "You like that Chili? Here, buy 8 cans in this package." With the granddaughter here and her friends, it does disappear. Kids eat a lot.
