Girl wouldn't abide by house rules and moves out. An ambulance chasing lawyer is suing the parents in the teens behalf for tuition and other expenses. Wouldn't this frost ya?

It's a trick one for sure, demanding the 18 year old young adult to dump the boyfriend or else, or maintain a curfew, and then cutting off support sounds like extortion. My guess is that the parents would be obligated to pay for the school tuition and costs associated with living away from home.

The long term damage to family relations is something that might destroy the family. I don't think the girl was given good legal advice nor did the parents think through the cost of their actions. This isn't a little kid.

If they're living in my house they live by the house rules or move out and support themselves. !8 is an adult in most states and they can make there own decisions. Where does it say a parent is obligated to support a rebellious teen.

Eighteen is adulthood. Live by the rules or get out, that is a reality check.

As a senior in high school, she may have turned 18 recently. The article I read says she has been living away from home for months, which would put her at 17 when this all came to a head. I agree that if a kid or grand kid is living here, they follow our rules, the stickler is the tuition for her school. It's a mess for sure and it could take years to heal this riff, certainly not worth five grand or a stubborn ego.

You don't know what all the dynamics are. Are the parents being hard nosed jerks? Or is their daughter expecting them to support her while she does as she pleases.

We have been through similar with some of the kids and grandkids. Getting free room and board while using the homebase as a crash pad between parties isn't something most parents/grandparents are going to stand for. There comes a time when if that's the lifestyle choice you have made then get out on your own. Otherwise your just enabling the behavior.
