There is a three page long article on Huff Post today concerning the serious state we are in as a nation in dealing with what appears to be an epidemic in managing their care. Below is an excerpt from the article, quote.

Nationally, more than 6.4 million visits to emergency rooms in 2010, or about 5 percent of total visits, involved patients whose primary diagnosis was a mental health condition or substance abuse. That is up 28 percent from just four years earlier, according to the latest figures available from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality in Rockville, Md.

By one federal estimate, spending by general hospitals to care for these patients is expected to nearly double to $38.5 billion in 2014, from $20.3 billion in 2003.

The problem has been building for decades as mental health systems have been largely decentralized, pushing oversight and responsibility for psychiatric care into overwhelmed communities and, often, to hospitals, like WakeMed.

The standard protocol has been to haul those experiencing a problem to the emergency room of a hospital, North Carolina which for some reason has twice the number of cases as other states, has instituted a new program. The mentally ill are delivered directly to a mental hospital that can deal with their problem. They don't need a regular hospital, they need med adjustments or some other program directed at their condition.

With the number of nutcases out there, is it any wonder that we have problems with violence and other problems associated with mentally ill people running around and falling through the cracks?

A thought occurred to me, would it be helpful is the rules of medicaid and medicare stated that for mental health care, only aproved mental health facilities would be eligible for payment of those who are experiencing mental health issues?

This has been building for decades since we closed down the nuthouses. IMO most of the substance abuse is those with mental health issues trying to self medicate.
