I became immediately interested in this topic because of a discussion going on on another thread. I am not particularly interested in who fought for the freedom of the mentally ill in the past, be they liberal or conservative. I am interested in what political groups favor incarcerating people who have committed no crime. I would expect those who profess to be politically Libertarian to oppose involuntary incarceration of anyone who has committed no crime. I do rmember in the 70s when there was concern that some of those incarcerated by involuntary comittment for mental illness were possibly political prisoners. Well what do others think? |

Who decides if and when it's time to forcibly commit someone? The WSJ just finished an extensive series of veterans after WWII who were having great difficulty re-acclimating back into society and who were given lobotomies to "calm them down." The report suggested that someone in the family had to approve (those who did turned out to be sorry they did); but, I would suspect that many never received family approval but had it done anyway. I saw some of the veteran patients who had received lobotomies when I was a student in the early 60s. So, who makes the decision to commit someone and who closely follows the treatment in these institutions if they are committed? |

I'll take that as a compliment from someone who has smoked dope most of their life. |

Does this thread bother you enough to immediately attempt to trash sit? On the other hand, you may confirm some of my reservations. Classifying a person as mentally ill is a very subjective action. Again, should people be incarcerated who have not committed any illegal action. Edited by colo_crawdad, Dec 24 2013, 10:47 PM.

Not sure what Neutral posted in response to my question and the question of the thread, but he sure was quick to run away and hide following his last post. |

I agree with Ban. Who decides whether someone is mentally ill enough to be committed involuntarily? Who would you choose to make that decision for you? |
