This is worth a thread of it's own: Considering "how socialist a country is," based on a nation's welfare expenditures (social/entitlement programs) when compared to the nation's GDP shows the US being more socialistic than is Canada. A recent updated article comments on a study done by the "Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), titled ""Social Expenditure Database." Of the Thity-four countries mentioned in the study, the U.S. ranked 11th and Canada 22nd in % of GDP spent on social expenditures. The U.S. lead all countries in highest % of GDP contributions made by private sources for welfare expenditures. The rankings are as follows: 1 France 2 Denmark 3 Sweden 4 Belgium 5 Austria 6 Germany 7 Finland 8 Great Britain 9 Italy 10 Netherlands 11 United States 12 Portugal 13 Spain 14 Japan 15 CHE 16 Ireland 17 Greece 18 Norway 19 Luxembourg 20 ??? 21 Iceland 22 Canada 23 Hungary 24 SVN 25 NZL 26 Poland 27 Czech Republic 28 Australia 29 Estonia 30 SVK 31 Israel 32 Turkey 33 South Korea 34 Mexico Edited by Banandangees, Dec 15 2013, 02:25 AM.

That is interesting. To me it indicates that the US is spending money on the wrong type of social expenditures and spending that money inefficiently. |

Well assuming your list is correct and its quite obvious that Canada has far more social programs in play than does the US. the only conclusion is that the US is spending its social program budget in the wrong places or it is doing so ineffciently. Canada, for eg has universal health care, A pregnant woman gets a year off work with pay, everybody gets at least some social security whether they have worked or not.Low paid workers cna apply for Gain (guaranteed annual income supplement). There is similar program for pensioners who are low income. And so on. So how do we do that & spend less per GDP than the US. Obviously the answer appears to be that we do it more efficiently. |

Most social services (starting with our health care system) does not show up in the Canadian government expenditures as most of these expenditures are in each individual provincial and territorial budgets. sent from near Otranto, Italia with my nexus7 tablet. |

Yes I forgot about that, it could skew the figures unless they are counting that. |
