I'd answer that if I thought he'd listen.

No he's grinding a political axe. One of theses days we shoudl start listing all the horror shows going on in the American system. Hpoqwever since I don;t live there I have no personal experience woith it. I have plenty of persoanl experince woiththe one here since my parents have been haivng lots of problems over the last 10 years (with their health, not the system). i could tell him the whole story about my granddaughter but he would disregard it, going out to look under rocks for the bad stories.

Maybe he would take time to read the series on St Pauls in Vancouver, an aging hospital that is being renovated, but there are a wholeseries of positive stories on this place.

See http://www.theprovince.com/news/heartbeat/index.html

But he is not intersted in balance, he only wants to cherry pick the negative stuffby using a website that focus on that.

Still no answer.
What was the question?

Why aren't emergency or unplanned surgical procedure wait times never measured?

In my experience and that of those close to me here in B.C., emergency surgery and urgent procedures go to the next available theatre, bumping less urgent patients to a later availability.

Yes but there are no records so in actual fact no one knows.

There must be some kind of record. I Googled "emergency surgery wait times U.S." and came up with a survey that may support your suggestion to some degree but it still places the U.S. health care system last overall.

Quote:

In a 2005 survey of sicker patients conducted in six developed countries, the United States ranked last on four measures of continuity of care and access problems reported by patients. The U.S. patients reported relatively longer waiting times for doctor appointments when they were sick, but relatively shorter waiting times to be seen at the emergency department, see a specialist, and have elective surgery.

Here's another study I found.

Waiting Lists in Canada: Reality or Hype?
American Medical Student Association
Prepared by Kao-Ping Chua, AMSA Jack Rutledge Fellow 2005-2006
...
Summary
What is clear from this analysis is that Canadian waiting lists are undoubtedly a problem
for many Canadians on certain elective procedures. What is not clear, however, is the magnitude
of the problem, and it is certainly not necessarily true that there is a Canadian "waiting list crisis."
• The lack of quality data on waiting lists from the Canadian government, coupled with the
limitations of surveys (e.g. differing methodologies), makes it very difficult to conclude
with any certainty the size of the true waiting list problem.
• The Canadian experience with waiting times will necessarily be uneven, as waiting times
vary by specialty, procedure, province, and region. That is, any given individual
Canadian will have different experiences with waiting times. This may partly explain the
existence of anecdotal reports of intolerable waits from certain individual Canadians
(such stories often are dramatized in the media), juxtaposed with the denial of the
problem from other Canadians.
• The U.S. does not experience problems with waiting lists as much as Canada does,
although the problem does exist for some Americans.
• There is a small minority of Canadians who receive care in the U.S., and even a smaller
minority who specifically come to the U.S. to receive care. The idea that hordes of
Canadians cross the border to avoid waiting lists is a myth.

Here's an interesting post by Ryan T. Cragun, a U.S. Sociologist. While it's in a blog it cites peer reviewed papers.

healthcare wait times – US vs. Canada

Quote:

Comparing the numbers for the US to the numbers for Canada aren’t really accurate. The data in the US is for all emergency room visitors (both acute and not acute) while the data for Canada is primarily for the most acute. I’m guessing that the average wait time to see a doctor is actually probably pretty similar, though maybe slightly shorter in Canada. Also, overall visit time in the emergency department in at least one region in Canada is about half of that in the US (per this report; see page 7). So, average wait time to see a doctor in the ER is probably a bit shorter in Canada, but not by much. Additionally, Germany, which also has a single payer healthcare system, has shorter wait times then either Canada or the US (per this article, which is in German but with an English abstract).

If you want any credibility here,
you best forget about peer reviewed medical papers
and stick with quoting the Canada Free Pres!
