It explains why Pat has no clue as to the struggles of ordinary people. |

Gaining $2.4 million or ending up with $0 is a difference between investing in Google and getting out in a timely fashion and investing in Enron and getting out in a timely fashion. Either is possible... and that was the question.... that's the speculation... both are possible. Or, there was a time you could stay safe and buy a AAA rated, triple tax free, insured bond at 5%, a time when you could have bought it at 10%. You can work hard or sit on your duff for a lifetime. You can regiment yourself and save some of your earnings and find a way to make it grow (fiscal conservatism) for a rainy day and a retirement; or, you can spend it on desirable nonessentials and good times (excessive social liberalism) and at the end struggle when your energy is gone. We've had those liberties to pursue in the past. The fear, is that those liberties will be "curtailed" and incentive lost by government nannyism in the future. |

There are ordinary people everywhere, including Port Dover and southern campgrounds. |

Struggles of ordinary people was the conversation. Well, wasn't Pat exposed to and work around "ordinary people if they are found everywhere? You're getting in on the conversation but seem to be unaware of the indication of Sea's statement that Pat didn't seem to be aware of the struggles of ordinary people because Pat's great, great grandfather started the business that Pat later worked at, managed and passed on the management of to his children at retirement. I'm sure in all of Pat's years he has come into contact with the struggles of ordinary people, but you probably aren't going to find the more intense struggles of ordinary people in Port Dover (where 98.6% of the people are white in the entire county) or the campgrounds in the south where northerners and Canadians go to spend the winter. |

Who do you consider ordinary people? I consider myself an ordinary people. I consider Pat an extraordinary person due to his parents, his environment, and his having inherited an ongoing business combined with a lot of luck along the way. Because a population is mostly white has nothing to do with how well off the people are. Here, the population is 99.9% white, but there's a lot of poverty nevertheless. Pat never had to struggle like most of the seriously poor folks, so imo, he doesn't have a feel for their plight. If he did, again imo, he wouldn't be as cavalier in his views regarding how easy it is to pull oneself up by his bootstraps. |
