Since subsidies are, in effect, government spending, we could save a lot of money while, at the same time, reduce spending. I've heard this theory several times recently from respected economists and it seems like a reasonable and fair way to reduce the deficit by raising revenue through reduced spending.

Do you really think that the GOP
is going to reduce subsidies for their
multi millionaire farm friends?

Will those attending college be willing to forgo their subsidized education? How about subsidized school lunches? There are many subsidies that the government funds, which ones to stop is the $64,000 question.

I certainly think most could be eliminated, particularly energy-related ones. Education related should be the last to go, as they're a very good way to break the vicious poverty breeds more poverty cycle.

In addition to subsidies that cost us a lot of money, we need to cut spending on capital gains tax rates, and carried interest. There are probably a few more areas of spending to help the rich that we could eliminate. Anybody else have ideas about where we could cut that kind of spending?

Well I'm on board for ending all subsidiaries. Brew mentions education subsidies and thinks they should be the last to go. But higher funding has not generally led to better education results. Look no further than Detroit as reason to think subsidizing their schools is a waste of money.

Detroit has high teacher pay. Not because they recruit the best qualified. It's combat pay for those willing to work in a war zone. :teeth:
