HS grads should be able to:

1) Balance a check book
2) Read and understand instructions
3) Complete a job application.

and it's sad that so many can't do those basic things. 12 years of schooling and one can't read or do simple math?

Just wondering. Do you have ANY evidence that a significant number of high school graduates in this country cannot do those things?

My experience with our kids and 10 grandkids has been good education wise. Smart little buggers. While operating the cruise boat, we had many groups of kids like 4 H, FFA and DEKA, proms etc. Smart kids.

School, like sports, rewards effort and hard work. The more you put in the more you take out..

Our youngest son just completed his Masters and is now applying to various schools for his PhD. He is paying his own way and managed to complete his BA without a student loan.

If he is accepted to a PhD program he is strongly considering having the Army pay his way. When he graduates (psychology) he would be commissioned as a Captain and owe 4 years. That beats a $100,000+ student loan....
