Some are doing what they are paid to do, very simple.
Many and way too many are not doing it. Why is that so hard to understand?
Do you really want to be satisfied with a system that is failing so many?

No, it's students who want to learn. It's that simple. Others do not or don't care. I don't think the system is failing in what they think they should be doing, but I think it's failing by not educating kids in what they want to learn.

You just want to take the blame off the system and if the numbers weren't so terrible you might have a point. When only 20% are getting an education it is stupid to blame the students.
Now you are starting with the name calling so I'll bow out.

Pat,

I remember reading your article about the New Jersey Public schools. Now, do you have ANY credible evidence that some kind of corruption has allowed students to pass the New York Regents Test without being able to read?
No, why? do you have any direct knowledge that the CBS claims are false?
Yes, I do. I know some teachers in the New York system and I do know about the Regents Exam as a requirement for any student t6o graduate from high School. also know the debate coach at the Bronx School of Science and know that nearly 100% of their graduates are admitted to the best6 schools in the nation because of their outstanding SAT and ACT scores as well as their grade point averages.. For years I have talked with those coaches at the national Speech and Debate Tournament.

I got to tell yo, Pat, that I have also taught with many graduates of New York Public schools. Now, what are your personal experiences since you have no credible evidence that corruption somehow allowed students to graduate without passing the
Regents Exams.

But if many can't read or write, let alone do math, how will they learn much of anything in the classroom? These skills are the base point for all others in learning. Which is why it is important to have this locked down in elementary education. I don't believe all schools or school systems are rotten, but there are certainly some where the housekeeping needs done.

I agree, kids need to learn to read, write and do arithmetic, but I speak from experience that reading the likes of Chaucer and learning more than basic algebra is a waste of time for some kids. For those who wish to learn that stuff, it should be provided, but requiring it of all students, imo, holds back the ones who do want to learn those things. My stepson, went to college thinking he wanted to be a teacher. When he started his in-class training, he discovered the folly of trying to maintain order in a group of 30 students which he was not allowed to discipline. As a result, he has decided not to be a teacher. I suspect many promising teachers feel the same way.

We're on the same page Neal. So the question is why do we waste time and resources on kids who will never use the stuff? We need reform.
