You don't think CBS is credible or are you saying they are right wing?
No, I was talking about you :haha:
I don't know why some are always ready to jump on Neut when he posts a legitimate thread. "Consider the source," if any read the short article they would know the source was CBS and the (NY) City University’s community college system. The title was a little misleading, not Neut. And as Tom writes (who apparently read the article) there are short comings in our city schools... kids are passed on (graduated) without certain skills for more advanced education and often lack even basics for technical skill training. Throwing money at it (education) hasn't been the answer, not without addressing the causes. Tom mentioned some as "social," parental and environmental; but, I think you have to be down in the thick of it to truly realize just how much "social," parental and environmental have been significant and growing causes. The bright side for Democrats is that it almost guarentees more future votes for their side.... if those young adults care to find where the polls are to cast their vote. The dark side for the country is a decreased ability for the US to be contributors to the world for good things.

We have praise for Chavez (God rest his soul) as a benign authoritative leader... he gives to the poor, not only Venezuela's poor, but to other SA nations... all from oil riches. But look at the economic state of Venezuela and other SA nations, not good; inflation is is double digit, some up in the 20% range; people are still poor and unemployment high. Crime and murder in SA is rampant. What happens to Venezuela and the nations Chavez gifted when the oil runs out? What are they prepared for? They aren't educated? Maybe we should take a good look at "benign, authoritarian leadership" and "nanny state" stability... we seem to be on that path in some respects.

Good thread Neut.
Because he is a troll
I don't see where he started the thread as trolling. It wasn't a political thread. He didn't even make any comment with his initial post, just "pasted" the article.
lol serious

It was CBS's title. The rest of the theme of the article came from "the City University’s community college system." What was so obviously "troll" about what the community college system reported and how does that reflect on Neut? Considering the theme of the article (education), who was Neut trolling?

I don't think that is what I said, but if it makes some feel better to say that, okay, yo go ahead and say it.
But you suggested that you say "no support" for what the article was saying. You doubt comes from somewhere, where else but from the credibility of the NYC school/college assertions?
What I posted was there is mp support in the article for what the headline said. I will gladly stand behind that.

You guys make me roll on the floor in laughter. It hasn't been three months since i brought up a scathing documentary on this very issue---kids not possessing the very basic reading, writing, and math skills at graduation. The education system there is a joke. Now a CBS news team from a local affiliate comes up with similar stats. Wake up guys, all is not rosy in public education in our country. How do these kids pass the graduation tests? I know in Atlanta that it was reported the teachers and administrators were allowing students to use cheat sheets and stuff to pass tests. People from all walks of life have made it through public universities while still being illiterate. A teacher in California was found to be unable to read or write. The percentages are alarming and you can't blame it on tests or other frivolous excuses. You should thank your lucky stars if your kids made it through and obtained an education, because that is not the case everywhere. This is not the same education system that you knew in the 40's, 50's, and 60's. It's a shame and what we don't need is more people putting their heads in the sand and making excuses for the failure. We need reform.

Pat,

Since you indicate that you actually know something about the NYC Public School System, how about explaining how Seniors can pass the New York Regents Exam without being able to read.

At risk of being called a racist, I think the reason we didn't see this in the 40's and 50's is due to the fact that schools were segregated, especially in the south. The lower intelligence levels of the poor have dragged the overall achievement levels down. Not to say all poor people are less intelligent, but a larger percentage seem to be. Those groups have little incentive to get an education like we were given and tend to want to do what their fathers did. We should train those groups to do those things.
