I don't know about you Neal, but there is just something distasteful to me to have our police and federal government employing drones over American territory. Some cities have backed off on the idea. It's '1984' like.
I guess I agree with you about that, Pat. I can understand the use of some surveillance equipment, but simply flying over and spying on people indiscriminately is offensive and should be illegal. Like searches, there should be some reason for the surveillance other than just routine.
Yep. Google was called to task over a similar operation. they were using some street camera operations to broadcast what people were doing at home. Creepy.

MR,

You guys do realize that many counties use fly over photos to check on improvements that may have been made on your property. This is done for property tax puposes.

Sadly privacy has become an urban legend...

Good point, Ken. I don't know the solution to that. I understand that some agencies are using flyovers to look for pot fields or other illegal activities, but, in the process, they can see people sunbathing in their back yards. That seems like an invasion of privacy. I guess so long as nobody complains, they can get away with it.

The law is "if it can be seen from a place where the looker can legally be" then there is no privacy violation.

There have been some rulings that set the flight height but I don't recall the number.

That makes sense. Question to me would be whether the craft was legally there.

Would a peeping tom, with binoculars, standing on the sidewalk and looking into your house be doing nothing illegal?

Wasn't it Bush and the republicans who pushed through the Patriot Act. The one that gives the govt rights to spy on its citizens with wiretaps and other means without justification?

I don't have to look it up as I didn't misstate what it says.
