I love Maureen Dowd. She has a wonderful way with words. In her op-ed today, this is what she said about Cheney.
"They’re going to say you were a misguided powermonger who, in a paranoid spasm, led this nation into an unthinkable calamity. Sleep on that.
Read the whole article here. It only takes a couple of minutes.

Good article. But when you weight Cheney's blunder and loss of American lives in the process, against Johnson's blunder and loss of American lives in Vietnam, both with little in the way of gain, you'd have to take some pause at just singling one out over the other... although, I expect that will happen.

You won't find me defending Johnson on the Viet Nam war. But, at least it was according to our foreign policy at the time. Pre-emptive war is a neo-conservative idea and, imo, is a stupid one.

Cheney serves as a good example, that convincing self confidence is not the same thing as being right. Being right is the Obama approach, discard ideology and analyze the problem. Johnson had some good qualities for a president, the most important being able to cajole congressman to get legislation passed. But, unfortunately he was wrong on Viet Nam.

Well, it would appear that Obama is (and has been) ready to use his drone strikes pre-emptively (without congressional approval)... but that's different, I know).
The Democrat Johnson thing: I suppose what you say will make the families of the 50,000 Americans killed in Vietnam feel so much better knowing that Johnson's war was "according to foreign policy," and those hundreds of thousands of Vietnamese military and "collaterals"... well they were just poor folks,..... like the ones Johnson was wanting to help in our south and ghettos. Now wasn't Johnson a Democrat/liberal? It seems liberals are selective when caring about the poor and down trodden. And it always amazes me how the liberals of the world are so critical of the US .... except of course, when they need our help, support, protection; almost as if they are entitled; makes me think of the "Squid, Quo, Pro" episode of Boston Legal:

Alan Shore(James Spaeder): I’d like to begin with a cheer. We’re number one! We’re number one! We’re number… It’s not much of a cheer. It’s repetitive and rhythmically uninteresting. But it does succinctly apply to our country, and has for quite some time. In fact, we’ve been number one so long that the rest of the world has come to rely on us. And we don’t let them down. We’re the world’s largest donor of development assistance. All in all, as a nation, we donate over fifty-five billion dollars a year in foreign aid. Money, money, money, money, money, money, money, money, everything is about money. But, we must never forget that there is a terrible human tragedy at the center of all this. Ms Pokharel lost her child. The loss of any child’s life is an incalculable horror. It is for that reason that I would ask you to award the plaintiff piles and piles of money. After all, we have so much to give away. Why not? Piles and piles. Thank you. Turns and walks toward the defendant’s table.
Oh, come to think of it, maybe we don’t have that much to give away, do we? Our national debt is now over eight trillion dollars. Eh, who cares? Give ‘em piles, anyway. What the hell? Never mind that we have thirtyseven million people living below the poverty line right here at home. What does it matter that our own literacy rate doesn’t even rank in the top fifty countries? Just keep shelling out the foreign aid. Does it really bother anyone that we don’t have the resources to help the Katrina victims? Of course not! What’s really important is that the United States continue to be that big ATM machine to the world, doling out wads of cash to every country who wants it. Money, money, money, money, money, money, money, never mind that we don’t have it. These other nations, they’re entitled, aren’t they? Even the ones who vilify us for protecting their freedom.
By the way, listening to plaintiff’s counsel, I couldn’t help but concur how horrible we Americans are. Okay, so we donate fifty-five billion dollars a year in foreign aid. But then, we impose certain conditions on those gifts.
Imagine our awfulness! And here, my God, we promise money to a clinic so long as they promise not to promote abortion. So they did. How dare we not give them the money just the same? We should have given them that and then some. We have the duty to provide these hand-outs. We have an absolute duty, because we are the United States of America. And these other nations, well, they’re entitled, whether they keep their promises or not.
He nods to the jury and walks back to the table.
Denny Crane(William Schatner) gives him the thumbs up, and then the jury.
They are all entitled.

They are all entitled. WTF are you talking about, Ban. I said I didn't support Johnson on the Viet Nam war. Are you just looking for an argument?
