The 1970′s Global Cooling Compilation – looks much like today
Posted on March 1, 2013 by Anthony Watts

A compilation of news articles on the global cooling scare of the 1970′s

pollution_sacrifice_DemocracyDoes the bullet point list for solutions to global cooling at right look familiar? It reads almost like some of the manifestos we get from warmists today, including the suspension of Democracy as the article in the Owosso Newspaper clearly demonstrates. Thanks to Poptech for the compilation.

During the 1970s the media promoted global cooling alarmism with dire threats of a new ice age. Extreme weather events were hyped as signs of the coming apocalypse and man-made pollution was blamed as the cause.

Environmental extremists called for everything from outlawing the internal combustion engine to communist style population controls. This media hype was found in newspapers, magazines, books and on television;

While a silent majority of the scientific community may have been more skeptical, you ironically find one of the most outspoken supporters of modern day Al Gore style global warming alarmism was promoting global cooling in the 1970s, the late Dr. Steven Schneider;

Bertie, take a good look at that list.

There's not a single scientific publication on the whole thing, just a whole series of popular magazines and newspapers trying to make up a scare story, and the CIA being concerned about extreme weather, because in those early days they did not realize the relationship between Warming and extremes.

Several of the publications mention "Scientists" without actually naming any of them - that's a trick deniers still try today, like Inhofe's famous list of 1,000 "scientists" who are skeptical, and turn out to be petroleum engineers, dentists, and God knows what else, anything but actual Climate Scientists.

And then there's your wonderful video, with an unquestioned authority telling of the cooling - Leonard Nimoy. How can we doubt him? Spock would never lie to us!

The article also quotes Walter Orr Roberts and NCAR. It does not mention that Roberts was the originator of NCAR, and so was around at the very beginning, when little was known for sure - he was a great organizer - but a Climate Scientist? Not so much.

The only actual working Climate Scientist mentioned in your article is the late Steven Schneider, who ran some models in the early days, when we knew far less than we do today, that showed Global Cooling "possible".

Here's the rest of that story:
Wikipedia

The story made headlines in the New York Times. Shortly afterwards, Schneider became aware that he had overestimated the cooling effect of aerosols, and underestimated the warming effect of CO2 by a factor of about three. He had mistakenly assumed that measurements of air particles he had taken near the source of pollution applied worldwide. He also found that much of the effect was due to natural aerosols which would not be affected by human activities, so the cooling effect of changes in industrial pollution would be much less than he had calculated. Having found that recalculation showed that global warming was the more likely outcome, he published a retraction of his earlier findings in 1974.

But as your article shows, the magazines kept publishing those errors throughout the '70's, much the same as Deniers like you and Anthony Watts still keep posting long-debunked crap.

Your article also pulls the usual right wing blogger's trick of claiming great communist and leftist conspiracies to force us to change our way of life, but not a single link to any actual facts.

Typical of Anthony Watts and his friends at WattsUpMyButt.

A battle of wits with Bertie is only a half battle.

But never fear - he'll not only deny he lost, but he'll claim I never even responded to his "facts".

I remember scientists being the promoters of global cooling, so saying it was not related to scientific findings is absurd. And no I'm not digging into old documents to prove my statement, if you are old enough, you recall news magazines and local weather meteorologists bringing this up. It wasn't just magazine articles.

I too wondered what is going on to have similar statements made today but saying just the opposite would occur. Here is my unscientific but logical conclusion. Scientific forecasts can be wrong and totally off base. Lab experiments saying one thing just didn't pan out globally speaking. There are just too many factors.

Should I now blow off scientific reports for warming? Nope, the scientists do the best they can with available data. The fact is the climate has changed and I suspect many of the same changes can affect jet streams and currents, which bring us weather. A slip south and northern cold comes south. Pole shifts of the axis occur too in time, i think a small shift means a lot when we are talking about distance to the sun and getting direct sun light.

It's impossible to know anything with certainty but super storms are happening and so are droughts. I saw on the news where a town in Texas just lost a big meat packing facility because the herd was sold off. No grazing land left. A couple of thousand jobs went bye bye, plus the down will dry up too. Texas and part of other states are in severe drought conditions.

i lived through the '70's too. If you're going to claim "absurdity", you'd better have some sort of proof.

I saw the magazine articles, I saw the weathermen. I remember just as many or more articles predicting warming as cooling. And I don't recall anybody saying we had to go back to living in caves.

And I don't recall any actual Climate Scientists making any definitive statements one way or the other.

But why do we have to depend upon our faulty memories? Here's the actual numbers of articles:

And Weathermen are not Climate Scientists. Even these days, the weathermen still don't get it right.

I don't believe they held an unbiased review of the articles. The site is biased towards climate warming and so are the guys who make the claim. Nowhere do they claim to be archivists, nowhere do they claim to have compiled every scientific article from every course worldwide. But in particular, be the very fact that cooling was the accepted story and the one being discussed in general. I stand firmly by my recollection of the times as it was on many peoples minds. The entire subject of climate is more complex than scientific knowledge, we are at the tip of the proverbial iceberg when it comes to understanding all the forces that make up climate. But What I accept is weather being more unstable and events more violent. Plus droughts and such are evidence that the change has affected the landscape and environment we inhabit.

But of course, they don't have to. It has been done by every University with a Climate Science course. These days, with the Internet, it's not difficult.

And that's exactly what the chart proves is not so. I could produce many more with exactly the same result if you'd like. Here's one:

I can't argue with your personal recollections. But my recollection is very different.

So because you don't understand it, neither can the scientists who have been studying it for the last 150 years? Or is your argument that since they don't understand every aspect down to the tiniest detail, all of their knowledge is bogus?

How are you at atomic physics? Could you build an atomic bomb? Atomic Physicists don't understand every aspect of that subject either. They still have unanswered questions at the quantum level. So I guess Hiroshima was a myth.
