General Motors Co. is planning to build as many as 36,000 Chevrolet Volts and other plug-in hybrids for worldwide delivery this year, 20 percent more than in 2012, two people familiar with the effort said.

GM is planning to build 1,500 to 3,000 of the fuel-efficient vehicles a month, said the people, who didn’t want to be identified because the target isn’t public. GM sold about 30,000 Volt and similar Opel Ampera cars globally in 2012, said Jim Cain, a company spokesman, who declined to give a target for this year.

The 36,000 target is “probably a doable number,” Jim Hall, principal of consultancy 2953 Analytics, said. “It will have a full calendar year in Europe” and GM will probably sell more this year now that the Volt is eligible for the car-pool lane in California, he said.

It is expected that the Gen II Volt will be released sometime in 2014, with better battery range, slightly larger size and noticeably lower costs. That should boost sales quite substantially.

In the meantime, Volt led Plug-in Electric Vehicle sales for last quarter 2012:

BTW, there is speculation that the Gen II Volt will come in both a sedan and a coupe version.

If it's released, the coupe will probably look something like this concept:

Brew,
You know this can't be true, GM is going to send the Volt to the scrap heap and that it's all just a ploy!

That's unfortunate, Corky.

The guy getting 18,173.79 MPG in his Volt is going to be some P*ssed if they come take his car away...

(Leading Volt mileage as per Voltstats.Net)

BTW, nearly 500 owners are getting over 250 MPG, and the average is 128 MPG.

The most important information for GM is the car pool lane allowance. Once southland commuters learn they can fly solo if the car is a Volt, watch for the sales bump. Anybody traveling in the LA-Orange-san Diego region are well aware of the time savings that comes with using these lanes. This is big news to commuters.

This fella is getting over 1,000 MPG, and of course paying nothing for electricity.

Commuter lanes just add to the joy.

Next thing is a fake car covers to make your car look like a volt just like the dummies trick.

People driving less and switching to more fuel efficient vehicles has hurt the funding for roads here in Michigan. Our GOP governor is calling for a tax increase, either at the pump or some other way to fund road repairs and maintenance. Taxing gas directly at the pump seems the fairest way as those paying are those that use the roads. But, it's a bit of a hard sell to raise the gas tax $0.14 when it is already $4 a gallon.

Another idea being floated is an increased registration fee on electrics and hybrids. It makes sense as they use the roads, but use very little fuel.
