I watched the academy award winner a few nights ago on a pirated disk from a Mexican market. Really wondered about its accuracy as I watched it. It has caused some raised eyebrows in Canada, not the least of which from Ken Taylor. While Mendez of the CIA is the hero in the movie, he was actually only in Tehran for 1.5 days of the 3 months of the incident. Anyway this article sets things straight. Its unfortunate that Hollywood can't portray historical events accurately. I haven't seen the bin laden film yet, but I have to wonder how accurate that one is as well. Poetic license is fine, but I get concerned that history a few hundred years from now will have recorded some of these events inaccurately because of entertainment value.

One would hope that history isn't determined by movies. The producers have acknowledged that the movie isn't accurate in every respect.

I don't like movies that are supposed to be of historical events, and then wander way from the truth.

If they want to label it fiction and not pretend it has any historical validity, good on 'em.

I haven't seen the film, but after reading a little about it, I can see why the Canadians would feel slighted. Apparently, it was mostly a Canadian operation. In reading about this though, I discovered that most movies, which are meant to be entertainment wander from the truth often. Case in point is the movie "Lincoln". If we expect accuracy, perhaps we should look for documentaries instead of movies.

I watched lincoln as well, my wife who saw a PBS documentary on him recently pointed out the movie takes a lot of license.

funny cartoon. Assuming Americans are aware of Vimy ridge. One of the pivotal battles of WW1, 4000 Canadian soldiers lost their lives taking it, 7000 wounded.

We used to lose that many in a saying during the war of Northern aggression.

It was a different war.

And we had the smartest general in WWI.

(Considering the quality of the rest of them, not necessarily as big a boast as one might think.)

I've been hearing criticism or Argo, Lincoln and Zero Dark Thirty for historical inaccuracies. And, not just nitpicky things either. Some people don't care, I do. I also think they should be labeled fiction, but based on a true story. I haven't seen any of them, and may not. My sister saw Lincoln and was quite impressed. I watched the PBS documentary on Lincoln and liked it. I would rather hear respected historians commenting on the facts than watch drama.
