We have been boaters in California and Florida and find this hard to believe.. With the name of the boat in hand they must find someone who knows who these boaters are.

I'm sure they are checking with various state agencies to see if their is knowledge of such a named craft. Most likely what occurs is a family reporting that friends or family members are missing and so is their boat.

It's beginning to look like a hoax. Or some pretty foolish and ill prepared people have perished. The message wasn't clear with the boats name. And, the article I read said boats aren't registered by a name.

Looks liker a scam to me but 95% of my boating is fresh water. Many years ago when I lived in St Louis, our house was right under the approach to the St Louis Airports runway 24 out bout the outer marker. I had a Grumman Yankee that a student pilot crashed. I pulled all the nav/comm gear out, tossed it in a basket and put it in my basement. Included was an emergency locator beacon that accidentally got turned on. Days later, knock knock, the FAA says I have a crashed airplane in my house? They had been looking for this beacon for days. Whoops!
