Mountainrivers, I have a friend who had his prostrate taken out and then went though the radiation therapy about two years ago. He is the same age as you are. He is now back to his old self. Don't delay, just do it.

I am very sorry you have cancer and if you don't mind I will say a prayer for you.

MR, have you had regular "digit" exams?
Yep. I've had an enlarged prostate for years, but my PSA level had remained low until about a year ago, when it suddenly became elevated to an alarming level. That's when my PA recommended I see a Urologist.
Did you take medication for the enlarged prostate symptoms?

I have had BHP for some time now. I've tried the Alpha Blockers (ie; Flomax (tamsulosin), Uroxatral (alfuzosin), Hytrin (terazosin), Cardura (doxazosin), and Rapaflo (silodosin)), which give immediate relief from symptoms. But, they just didn't agree with me.

The Dr. then offered up the long term type med that shrinks the prostate over time (ie; 5-Alpha reductase inhibitors like Proscar (finasteride) and Avodart (dutasteride). When I checked them out at a prescription med watchdog website I subscribe too, it said the are associated with a higher incidence of agressive prostate cancer. Right away I said, no way, I can live with my symptoms. But, I have been considering the laser surgery.

MR, all the information you will ever need.

Thanks, Buck! That's a great site. I'll probably die of old age before I can read all of that. I'm at the point where the confusion has become overwhelming and I think my only hope is to put my faith in the doctors and hope for the best.

Thanks Berton. I don't put any faith in prayer, but I appreciate your offer. I'm sure prayer can't hurt.

I took Flomax for a while but it didn't seem to be doing any good and I don't like to take medicine unless I can see results. I didn't have any serious symptoms other than a weak urine flow and needing to go often, especially at night. So, I just had the PSA test done every year until last year when the test showed a need for further investigation. I've already talked about that.

MR, have the radiation done and even tell your oncologist to order a bone scan to rule out he possibility of it metastasizing to your bones. 90 % of the time that is where the cancer cells go.

Another site to look at....

MR, I'm sorry to hear about this. You might check out MD Anderson in Texas. Proton therapy is an alternate type of radiation.

Best of luck with whatever your decision is.

Thanks, Miss Kitty. My sister referred me to a site explaining proton therapy. I did quite a bit of research about that procedure and what I was able to determine was that it costs twice as much as regular radiation, is no more effective and I would need to relocate to another state for the treatment for about 7 weeks. It's pretty overwhelming to see so much concern and well wishes from people I don't even know, but I want everyone to know how much I appreciate it. I'm not looking for sympathy. I need to know my options and I've received several suggestions. I made an appt. this morning with my urologist for next Wednesday to discuss it all and hopefully make a decision.

Thanks, Buck. I had a bone scan done before the surgery, along with an MRI, and it was negative at that time for having metastasized. I will ask the urologist if I need another one since the surgery didn't remove all of the cancer.
