Prostate cancer; Have any of you had it?

i was diagnosed with prostate cancer after a PSA test indicated the probability. I had a biopsy done and it confirmed the cancer. My prostate was removed three months ago and I thought I was free of the cancer, but a recent PSA showed that I still have a small amount of cancer cells left in the area around where the prostate used to be. My urologist has recommended radiation therapy to hopefully kill the remaining cancer cells. I need to make a decision whether to undergo those treatments very soon and since most members are men, I thought I would ask if anybody has had this treatment done and what they would recommend as a result of the treatments. The treatments require a daily dose of radiation 5 times a week for 6 to 8 weeks. There really aren't but a couple of other options. Do nothing, which I can't accept. Hormone therapy, which isn't effective for getting rid of the cancer and eventually becomes totally ineffective. Other than those two, I know of no others. Any information will be gratefully appreciated.

Ouch! Sorry to hear about that MR. Good luck with what you decide. The radiation does sound like the best option. Keep the faith.

How old are you? My dad went through all of that and it pretty well finished him fro energy, etc. He says he wished he had just let it taken its course. Of course he was over 80. Maybe it depends on how agressive it is

I'm 71 and in good health otherwise. I understand that the fatigue factor is a biggie. My cancer was very aggressive according to the doctor, so doing nothing is not much of an option. I guess I could just accept my fate and hope for the best, but the survival instinct has set in and I want to do all I can to delay the inevitable. If nothing works and it kills me, well, that's life.

Sorry to hear. Battlled kidney cancer one year ago and now possibly another form. Prayers for you
Thanks guys. I appreciate your expressions of concern. Good luck to you too, Joe. I'm not a praying kind, but send the best of wishes for your recovery.

At 71, I don't think you have much choice but to go with it. The criteria is to try to find out how long it will take to kill you if left it, and judge it on that basis. I know that sounds rather brutal, but some prostate cancers are so slow moving you will usually die of other causes first. However since the prostate has been removed and the cancer appears to have moved outside it, I don't think you have any other option, since the cells could migrate elsewhere.

Been giving this a lot of thought since i fully expect to get it myself at some time and will have to make decisions.

I hope you don't get it, Telco, but the odds are against any man who lives long enough. My research suggests that I go ahead with the radiation, but I am looking for any information I can get that would provide an alternative. I've posted the warning before, guys, but please pay attention to your PSA tests. They aren't always suggestive of cancer, but they are an indicator of the possibility. Early diagnosis is the best course of action.

Sorry to hear anout it, MR.

I don't see that you have much option - it's radiation and the fatigue that comes with it, or doing nothing with the likelihood of something much worse than fatigue.

On the bright side, my son had radiation (for quite different reasons) and while the fatigue was bad at first, he did recover, feeling somewhat better in 6 months and with most of his energy restored in about a year.
