Windows 8 released

My Advice, don't touch it. I tried installing it onto another drive to assess it. Its awful, in fact I would go as far to call it an abomination. It is incompatible with a lot of software, including Microsoft software like older versions of Office. It no longer comes packaged with Media Center. Microsoft has the upgrade priced low because they know you will be forced to go out and buy a whole bunch of new MS software to use it. It is awkward to use and almost forces you to use Microsoft applications like Windows Explorer browser, Microsoft email, etc. and makes it awkward to use 3rd party applications. There is no longer a start button. If you want to get into things like your directory structure it takes several steps. It may be OK for a tablet, but for a desktop, forget it. No self respecting business will want to adopt it. Microsoft just handed the business computer market to Apple.

Get yourself a full version of Windows 7 while you still can, in case you need a new PC. Those will come packaged with Win 8, or Lose 8 as I am dubbing it.

This makes Windows ME & Vista look like the greatest thing since sliced bread.

Its completely different, they have tried to put a tablet operating system onto a desktop. It is dumbed right down.

Cnet rates it excellent.
The good: Windows 8 embraces the future wholeheartedly. Log-in and boot times are fast, the apps look gorgeous, and the Sync feature brings seamless transition between devices.
The bad: The learning curve is steep and in-app navigation isn't obvious. There are just too many known unknowns here.
The bottom line: Microsoft makes an aggressive, forward-thinking, and bold statement for the future of PCs with Windows 8, and vast security and speed improvements more than justify the $40 upgrade price.

Have yet to hear any positive comments about it. Still running XP on the Core 2 Duo and might buy a copy of Win 7 just to have it for the next machine I put together.

I like Win 7, it was what vista was supposed to be. MS in its wisdom, however forces you to upgrade from XP via Vista first, or do a clean install.

I've been happier with Win 7 than any previous version.

I think it'll be a long time until I move on now...

It's the clean install that's keeping me in XP rather than moving to 7. I have XP tweeked to within an inch of its life and the system runs flawlessly. Other than one USB drive that causes occasional timeout errors, the error logs are clean. I don't want to start new with 7, so after building my next machine, I'll keep the old one running and slowly install the umpteen gigabytes of software and data. First, however, Photoshop, about 20 plug-ins, another 20 photo processing programs and all the images and the database.

Next... The first person shooters that won't run on the old system! We all know computers were invented for games!

Buy a second hard drive & do a dual boot system & slowly migrate stuff over to a clean win 7 install. That was how I did it.
