My guess is it takes far more energy to make the gasoline than you get back when you burn it as fuel.

Not really. Any CO2 removed from the atmosphere will be returned when the fuel is burned.

Eric, yes it would be returned, but at least it would not be more CO2 pulled out of the earth and added to the air. It would avoid/reduce the never ending escalation in atmospheric CO2 levels.
