It looks like most agree that global climate change is real. The causes are still a matter of conjecture. I went beyond this article and found the list for the 10 countries with the most CO2 emissions. China has nearly as much emissions as the next three countries combined, USA,India, and Russia, and the world's fastest growing economy. Fat chance getting the world's worst polluter to scale back economic growth or to sacrifice growth in return for emission reduction. Their population demands continued rapid expansion and although they are heavily invested in green energy technology, it's not nearly enough to offset growth. Russia, Iran, and Saudia Arabia are not going to cooperate on any treaties designed to reduce emissions , all three are heavily dependent on oil, gas and chemicals, three CO2 intensive industries. Japan is not going to decrease fossil fuel use, in fact, after the nuclear plant meltdown, they are turning more towards conventional fuels for energy. Canada, another economy heavily invested in fossil fuel. Fat chance they will risk their economy. This topic gets bantered around a lot, but other than talking and arguing about what is or what is not, when you view the polling numbers, again, fat chance any politician will stick their neck out much further than offering up rhetoric. Pew Climate Change Poll Reveals That Less Than Half Of Americans Make Anthropogenic Connection The Huffington Post | By James Gerken Posted: 10/16/2012 2:40 pm EDT Updated: 10/16/2012 3:27 pm EDT Climate Change, Video, Pew Climate Change Poll, Pew Research, Pew Research Poll, Climate Change Opinions, Climate Change Polls, Global Warming Polls, Pew Climate Poll, Pew Global Warming Poll, Us Climate Change Opinions, Green News Recent polling conducted by the Pew Research Center suggests that a greater number of people in the U.S. are accepting the reality of climate change. 67 percent of Americans said that there is "solid evidence" that average global temperatures have been rising in recent decades, signaling a gain of four points since last year and 10 points since 2009. Yet only 42 percent say this warming is "mostly caused by human activity," according to Pew. In a presidential election marked by accusations of "climate silence" and a lack of forthright discussion of what has been called a "planetary emergency," the Pew polling reveals another stark difference between supporters of Barack Obama and Mitt Romney. Only 42 percent of Romney supporters say there is strong evidence of global warming and a paltry 18 percent acknowledge its human origin. This 42 percent stands in sharp contrast to the 88 percent of Obama supporters who say that average global temperatures are on the rise and 63 percent who say it is anthropogenic. Among Republicans overall, 48 percent say there is "solid evidence" of global warming, up from 35 percent in 2009. Despite these numbers, at least 97 percent of the most actively publishing climate scientists and nearly a dozen of the world's most prominent national science academies acknowledge that the world's climate is changing as a result of increasing atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases, mostly from the burning of fossil fuels. According to the Pew poll, 45 percent of Americans -- including 58 percent of Democrats and 30 percent of Republicans -- answered yes to the question "Do scientists agree earth is getting warmer because of human activity?" NASA scientist James Hansen recently said, "There's a huge gap between what is understood by the scientific community and what is known by the public." Amid a year of record temperatures and severe drought, Hansen and his colleagues released a statistical analysis suggesting that the odds are too great for many of the past decade's most extreme weather events to have happened by chance. He wrote in the Washington Post, "our analysis shows that, for the extreme hot weather of the recent past, there is virtually no explanation other than climate change." The increase in greenhouse gases has also warmed the world's oceans, posing threats to marine life and the food security of island nations. The lead author of a 2012 study on warming oceans, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory climate scientist Peter Gleckler, said, "most of the observed global ocean warming over the past 50 years is attributable to human activities." According to Pew, these numbers are based on telephone interviews in the first week of October of just over 1,500 American adults in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. In addition to the above, I looked up what 10 nations contribute the most to CO2 emissions. 1. China-----8,240, 958 tons per year 2. USA-------5,492,170 3. India------ 2,069,738 4. Russia----- 1,688,688 5. Japan------ 1,138,432 6. Germany--- 762,543 7. Iran--------- 574,667 8. Korea------- 563,126 9. Canada----- 518,475 10. Saudia Arabia 493,726 Edited by Pat, Oct 17 2012, 06:00 AM.

Another fact is that the US has reduced it's CO2 emissions to the lowest since 1992. LINK |

Pat, polls will be important as soon as science becomes a democracy. China is doing more to promote green energy than any other country in the world - and they must. They are getting hit harder than almost anywhere else. While we diddle about doing little or nothing in terms of technology, China is moving ahead at lightning speed. They'll soon be reversing their own emissions growth, and they they'll start exporting products, flooding the market with cheap solutions. Note that they chart maker had to split the E.U. up to keep from embarrassing the U.S. even further. Both the US and Canada are well on their way to being second rate powers. Canada's record is disgraceful. It's going to cost Harper in the next election. Edited by Brewster, Oct 17 2012, 09:54 PM.

It is not a scam, only an idiot could look at the evidence & claim that. Even a 4 year year old knows you do not piss in your own drinking water. The important point that Pat raised is that there are a lot of players out there who will not do anything about it, so we are doomed to follow a self destructive course. One can argue over time frame, but eventually mother nature herself will take care of the problem like she usually does. Extinction. There is one biological rule that is immutable. No organism can survive in its own waste products. Even Newt. |

Agree Brew, China is mass producing solar panels and controls, so now the second part of that little story, they have been caught red handed dumping cheap panels on the world at less than it costs them to produce. Here in America, and the president hit on it last night in the debate, we are not going to sit back and let China steal the market illegally. I assume Canada and the EU will take the same approach especially Germany. Notice how much wind power represents alternative energy on your chart. I doubt China can compete with North American manufacturers in our markets. We too have large manufacturing plants devoted to this technology. I think short term, wind holds the most promise. There are millions of square miles of nothing but scrub grass, sand and wind. |

Oh, the Chinese will cheat if they can, alright. But if they can't, they'll upgrade their methods and beat us anyway. North American leaders can only block new tech for so long... Edited by Brewster, Oct 18 2012, 01:32 AM.
